Cape Town - The Western Cape on Tuesday welcomed a R12m allocation from national government for drought relief.

Provincial Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde said the money would be used to provide fodder for animals.

Parts of the province continued to experience drought conditions, felt most keenly by emerging farmers.

It was expected that there would be challenges with grazing during the summer months.

The Central Karoo, the West Coast region, and parts of the Cape Winelands received isolated rains, but remained dry due to below average rainfall.

"We are determined to accelerate the pace of successful land reform, and keep emerging farmers in the market," said Winde.

The province had to date spent R36.5m on drought relief for farmers. Part of this amount had gone to emerging grain farmers to pay their employees’ salaries.

The funds were sourced from the equitable share, a reallocation of the comprehensive agriculture support programme, and a donation from AgriSA.

Winde said a co-ordinated climate response action plan was in place, in partnership with the private sector and academia.
