Cape Town - A Mitchell's Plain man who killed his wife by assaulting her so badly that she lost one eye has been handed a 25-year jail sentence by the Western Cape High Court.

On May 5, Judge Kate Savage found Steve Bastiaan, of Lost City in Mitchell's Plain, guilty of murdering his wife, Belinda Louise Bastiaan, 33, Netwerk24 reported.

He was also found guilty of assaulting her on April 30, 2015, but acquitted of a rape charge. He was sentenced and jailed on Wednesday.

Belinda was in a coma for a month after her eye was ripped out of its socket. She died soon after regaining consciousness. Her one eye hung on her cheek after the assault, while the other eye was pushed deep into her head.

According to the charge sheet, police were called to the couple's house on April 30, 2015.

Bastiaan was arrested and charged with assault. He was released on R500 bail in May 2015, provided he stay away from Belinda.

The couple and their children visited Marlyn Ludick the next month, on June 20. On June 21, Ludick received a call from Belinda's cellphone. It was Steve Bastiaan who asked her to send her daughter, Shaymeeyah Ganief, to pick up the couple's children.

When Ganief arrived at the home, the gate and front door were locked and the lights were off.

A friend, Anrico Bastiaan, who went to the house with Ganief, jumped over the wall and opened the front door. Belinda was lying in a pool of her own blood in the house. Bastiaan was not there and their children were asleep in a room.

Anrico and Ganief called police and Belinda was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital. She died on August 7, after both her eyes were removed.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said they welcomed the verdict. It was an important indication that the fight to end crimes against women and children was bearing fruit.

Prosecutor Evadne Kortje said Belinda had suffered greatly under her husband's hand and deserved 25 years in prison.
