Johannesburg - A 44-year-old woman was arrested with cocaine worth almost R500 000 at OR Tambo International airport, police said on Friday.

She was travelling on a Zambian passport and allegedly tried to smuggle 1.5kg of cocaine into the country on Tuesday afternoon, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

The drug had an estimated street value of R478 500 and was allegedly hidden in a false compartment of her luggage.

According to her passport, she left Zambia for India earlier this month. She then took a flight from Mumbai to Johannesburg, via Addis Ababa.

She will face charges of dealing in drugs when she appears in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
