Young woman dies in plunge from Umhlanga apartment

2016-02-24 15:47

Durban  A 23-year-old woman has died after falling from the fifth-floor balcony of an upmarket Umhlanga flat complex on Tuesday.

A police source close to the investigation, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said that the incident was most likely a "freak accident".

The source said the woman was understood to have been trying to climb through a window from a balcony after she was locked out of her flat.

As she made the move from the balcony onto the slanted ledge, she slipped and fell five storeys into a courtyard below.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said that, by the time paramedics arrived at the scene, the woman was already dead.

Mathe described the young woman’s injuries as "extensive".

A woman who works at the complex, who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity, described the woman’s death as "terrible".

"It is so horrible when you know someone and see them every day and now she is dead. The atmosphere in this whole place has changed," she said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said they had launched an inquest into the woman’s death, a move that suggested that detectives did not suspect foul play.
