After a seven-year hiatus from the world of broadcasting, journalist and media personality Nokwazi Zimu is returning to radio to speak her truth at Power FM.

From tomorrow, she takes on the role of the new Power Breakfast co-host with Lawrence Tlhabane.

“I am very excited to be taking on this role. I was at [SABC2’s] Morning Live before taking a break, and so I am eager to get a better understanding of the listeners and to become a voice for them,” she told City Press.

Zimu added that returning to broadcasting after a break to look after her family is “like being born again”.

Born in Soweto, Zimu always knew she wanted to get into broadcasting. She remembers mimicking her favourite newsreaders at Metro FM as she was growing up.

Aside from being a stand-in anchor at Morning Live, she also worked as a news reporter at e.tv.

Zimu started her own communications company, Nono Media, in 2008, which she will keep going as she takes on her new role.

The early 6am slot doesn’t seem to faze her. “You know, early mornings aren’t new to me. I have three children [aged three, six and nine] who I have to get ready in the morning, and I am a bit of an insomniac anyway. So, I’ll be fresh for the show.”
