Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma has accepted the resignation of SABC board member Leah Thabisile Khumalo.

In a brief media statement, the presidency acknowledged the resignation of the third member of the current board.

“President Jacob Zuma has received and accepted the resignation of Ms Leah Thabisile Khumalo as a member and deputy chairperson of the Board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Khumalo’s resignation follows from the resignations of Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso who resigned following the state broadcaster’s presentation to Parliament’s communications committee.

The board had come in for sharp criticism from MPs for what has been described as “shenanigans” relating to the appointment of controversial chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

SABC board chairperson Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe indicated that he would stand firm in his position and MPs have called on Communications Minister Faith Muthambi to dissolve the board.

Parliamentary committee chairperson Humphrey Maxegwana said in a statement that an inquiry into the board’s fitness will be held and finalised before November 24.
