Zuma confident elections will go 'very well'

2016-08-02 17:53

President Jacob Zuma says he believes the country is ready for the local government elections on Wednesday.WATCH

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma says he does not believe anything can derail the elections on August 3.

Zuma was at the IEC results centre in Pretoria on Tuesday where he was given a tour of the facility and told of how things operate.

"I have been taken through and shown very advanced infrastructure ... and also the indications of the transparency of our elections. I think all the stakeholders of the country are here and have the facilities," Zuma told reporters.

"It is clear that very little will go wrong, everything will go fine. The process is so transparent that everyone has an opportunity to look."

Zuma said he was satisfied with what he had been shown and said it was encouraging to see the level of transparency that was in place as many people on the African continent looked to South Africa to lead by example. He said it was also encouraging that the country continues to uphold the principles of democracy when it comes to elections.

"I'm very happy because we are one of the biggest countries on the African continent and I think the manner in which we conduct our elections is very satisfying and even our democracy is maturing together with the system under the direction of the IEC commissioner. I can now say without any fear of contradiction that we are ready for the elections. The fact that they have started with special votes indicates our readiness," he said.

Zuma urged all South Africans to ensure that their votes count and they don't spoil ballots.

"All that is left is for the voters to vote properly. I'm looking forward to [fewer] spoilt papers ... I'm confident we are going to do very well," he said.
