Zuma extends condolences to Tanzania after quake

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma offered condolences to the government and people of Tanzania, after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Sunday morning.

“I wish to extend our condolences to [His Excellency] President John Magufuli, the Government and the people of Tanzania. 

''The people of South Africa share the pain and loss of the loved ones, their homes and property, and our thoughts and prayers go out to all the affected families. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery.” 

''The South African government wishes the rescue and recovery teams every success in their efforts.''

News reports say between 13 to 16 people died, and at least 200 were injured in the quake which also shook Uganda and Rwanda.

Pictures from the scene show some buildings reduced to rubble.


According to a USGS map the quake struck near Bukoba on Lake Victoria.
