Pretoria - An acoustics expert said neighbours of Oscar Pistorius could have heard a woman screaming the night he shot Reeva Steenkamp, while the runner's manager described the star sprinter being seriously in love with her, during the 35th day of the Paralympian's murder trial.

State prosecutor Gerrie Nel worked to show that defence witness and acoustics expert Ivan Lin left out key factors in his report that could have made it possible for Pistorius's neighbours to hear a woman screaming.

"Now if I said at 177m the bedroom window was open, you can exclude all versions of the model where you said the window was closed," said Nel.

When Nel asked Lin if he would go so far to say that the Pistorius neighbours were lying about hearing a woman scream the night of the murder, Lin replied no, conceding the neighbours could possibly have heard Steenkamp screaming.

Nel asked Lin if he thought the State's witnesses were lying. "Not at all," he replied.

The defence called Pete Van Zyl, Pistorius's long-time manager, to the witness stand, who testified the athlete was at the top of his career when he shot Steenkamp.

"The London Olympics was about two people," said Van Zyl, "and that was Usain Bolt and Mr Oscar Pistorius."

Van Zyl also described Pistorius being fearful of crime. "I asked him why he was carrying a gun, he specifically replied to me he's carrying a gun because he's fearing for his own safety," said Van Zyl.

The manager said Pistorius was deeply committed to Steenkamp and wanted to take her overseas to his competitions, wishing to include her in his professional life more than any other girlfriend.

"For me, it was a first, he's never asked me for anything like this," said Van Zyl.

State prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked for a short adjournment, saying he did not expect Van Zyl to take the witness stand and he wanted more time to prepare for his cross-examination.

"I had no idea that this witness would give evidence today," said Nel.
