Johannesburg - Oscar Pistorius’s father, Henke, was one of the first visitors at Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru II prison on Saturday morning to visit his son, City Press reports.

Henke Pistorius parked his silver Toyota Prado under a tree in the prison’s parking lot, near the main entrance, before 07:30.

He held a DVD case in his hand while he stood and waited outside his car for the visitors’ centre to open at 08:00. Visiting hours are between 08:00 and 14:00 over weekends. His daughter, Aimée, arrived at the prison about an hour later with her uncle, Arnold, in his white Mercedes-Benz.

Henke Pistorius stood at the entrance to the centre speaking to a warder. His daughter kissed him in greeting and they walked in together.

City Press’s sister newspaper, Rapport, watched the two emerge a short while later, walk to Arnold Pistorius’s car, and return carrying five bags, including a brown paper packet, a plastic Game shopping packet, a Woolworths grocery bag, and a black shoulder bag which Aimée slung over her right shoulder.

They were barely in when brother Carl arrived at 08:40 with a unidentified female relative who also carried a shopping bag.

Oscar Pistorius has been placed in a single cell in the prison. Area commissioner of the prison, Zebulon Monama, said this was the case with many other prisoners whom the department of correctional services believed needed protection.

For the first six months of his term, Pistorius’s jail visits - four visits a month of 45 minutes each over weekends - will take place behind a thick glass partition before he qualifies for contact visits.
