23.1 million eligible voters

2011-02-09 15:19

Pretoria - The number of South Africans who will be able to cast their votes in the local government elections has topped the 23.1 million mark, the Independent Electoral Commission announced on Wednesday.

IEC chairperson Brigalia Bam said that prior to the voter registration weekend there were 22 691 676 people on the Voters' Roll.

Following the voter registration weekend, this figure had increased to 23 161 975 voters.

Bam was satisfied with the turnout, but hoped that a further 966 000 people would register during a second voter registration weekend on March 5 and 6.

She said 1.406 million voters registered over the weekend.

They included 729 732 people who re-registered because they had moved house and 142 954 people who re-registered because of a change in voting district boundaries and new wards.

She said that 52% of those who registered were women.

The majority of the 534 016 new registrations took place in KwaZulu-Natal with 134 807, followed by Gauteng with 91 708 and the Eastern Cape with 90 933.

The date of the election has yet to be announced.

and what about the 14,5million that are created to bolster the numbers in certain areas for certain parties?

      Zanu - 2011-02-10 07:56

VOTE VOTE VOTE vote IFP vote DA vote COPE vote ID vote UDM vote AFP vote ACDP vote UCDP vote PAC vote MF vote APO vote APC vote SACP vote NNP HOWEVER DO NOT VOTE ANC!!! If you do, you will get expensive Taxi fares, expensive bread and milk, expensive Toll Roads, unpredictable electricity, non safe water, crime, unemployment and everything else that goes along with a corrupt and over-powerful one party system. Save South Africa! Vote anything but ANC A strong opposition = a strong South Africa

  • Paul - 2011-02-09 15:41

Calling people who cant read and write "voters" is a bit of a stretch.

      Tshifhiwa - 2011-02-09 15:51

      what is your suggestion Paul?

      Paul - 2011-02-09 15:54

Produce a matric certificate and a tax clearance upon registration to vote.

      Biza - 2011-02-09 15:56

Im sure if your mom can read then all the moms can do the same.

      Krush - 2011-02-09 16:12

Tshifhiwa, only tax payers should be allowed to vote. It's our money that runs the country.

      kingoftomorr - 2011-02-09 16:12

Paul u 100% spot on, no tax or matric should = no vote! we have uneducated fools deciding where this country goes, scarY!!!!

  • Bosduif - 2011-02-09 15:45

How many of these pay tax?

      Paul - 2011-02-09 15:49

      Excluding the whites - 0.05%.

      roadvark - 2011-02-09 18:44

There are about 6 million registered taxpayers and although this is not broken up into race groups for obvious reasons I would hazard a guess that about 2 to 3 million whites. Anyone got a better figure? The startling fact is that for every taxpayer there are another three voters who don't pay formal (registered) taxn and a large number of these are receiving basic income grants. Is this sustainable? Makes you think doesn't it.

      AJ - 2011-02-10 07:35

@roadvark - interested to see where balck middle class vote goes in the main centers. Although we cannot do much about the poor rural guys getting manipulated, the substantial numbers of black middle class are also getting ripped off now on their monthly bills and service. They can swing it for the main centers that's for sure. There must be many of them that are just as disillusioned with the current state of affairs.

      roadvark - 2011-02-10 09:24

Yes it is in transition and the black middle class probably holds the key to the future informed vote. I think the ANC will have a problem in satisfying such divergent constituencies.

      30.0kwes - 2011-02-10 12:22

All of them are probably from zimbabwe or mosam.

      roadvark - 2011-02-10 20:24

15 milion getting basic income grants so the president says. Wow for every taxpayer there are 2.5 recipients. That's a bit much Sir.

  • spiderkzn - 2011-02-09 15:47

cos many of people not want to vote.

  • themantshepo - 2011-02-09 15:48

i am surprised it is not more.... in the townships we are passing off 15 year old teenagers as 18 year olds with temporary id i thought it would be alot more especially from the youth who are not even 18.... bwhahahaa south africa gotta love this place ne?

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-02-09 16:20

If one is a sado-masochistic degenerate, yes, then I would agree, 'gotta love this place'

      roadvark - 2011-02-09 18:21

hahaha Yep its a great place. Work as hard as you can, employ as few as you can, make as much money as you can, pay as little tax as you can and enjoy the beautiful country. It's great, 4X4, motorcycle, hiking sightseeing, nothing near it in the whole world.

  • CharlSkeptic - 2011-02-09 15:50

Getting into heaven is just an empty promise. But the fools who believe it, will only find out much later that they were duped, ONCE AGAIN. I reckon Zooma and his co-criminals are cleverer than we all think

  • TGIL - 2011-02-09 15:51

and theyre to blame for the state of the country. Mindless minions picking their noses in queues voting for baba zuma - goat herders destroying countries

  • JohannV - 2011-02-09 15:54

I wonder how many of these "eligible voters" currently live underground in cemeteries?

      PSquare - 2011-02-09 16:06

I simply cannot believe any figure that this country/goverment comes up with anymore. African people and corruption are inseperable.

      PSquare - 2011-02-09 16:12

I take it you are not African then and you are just here for a visit?

      Homo-Sapien - 2011-02-09 16:16

      According to some, yes.

  • madcow - 2011-02-09 16:12

What are people hoping will come out of casting their votes, seriously?

      Charles - 2011-02-09 16:21

we all live in hope(lessness). Paul has the best suggestion - Matric and tax registration before vote.

  • Charles - 2011-02-09 16:14

to all of you who replied , thank you . My suspicions confirmed . So easy to miss the point of an article and too easy get side tracked and speak Sh1t .

  • Charles - 2011-02-09 16:16

@ Jan , please point out where I show bias ? all i said was winning party - that could be anywhere and any party , SO who is biased?

  • Nice Guy - 2011-02-09 16:19

How many of the people are actually baboons?

      Paul - 2011-02-09 16:33

dont know exactly, but if you take the total number of ANCYL cards, divide by one you will probably come close.

  • anonojack - 2011-02-09 16:43

    ...and how many taxpayers?

  • Swartvel - 2011-02-09 16:43

This number consist of zimbabweans, a plan made between Jakop and Bobejaan mugabe. The two savages...they will not get away with this forever..savage bastards!!! Can you believe it...rape a woman and become the state president and still the woman vote for him,,

      Charles - 2011-02-09 16:46

well you know what they say , the BIGGER the prick , the higher it rises !!!!

  • Fakew - 2011-02-09 16:58

Minus the millions of illegal f**kers that was given a free pass. I hope they take all the jobs of these *unts that is the anc votersroll.

  • Atlas - 2011-02-09 17:21

How is it possible that we only have 5.9 million taxpayers and 23.1 million voters in this country - surely something is seriously wrong if almost 3/4 of voters do not pay tax. Why do the 3/4 have a say in what happens to my tax money?

  • Claude - 2011-02-09 17:28

23.1 million vboters, only 6 million taxpayers.............guess whose in the minority and supporting the maajority...............lifes a bitch...........lets see how many uneducated majority vote for the ruling party and then complain about service delivery for the next 3 years.....if you vote ANC, then shut up, stop burning schools, destroying hospitals and schools - get a job and make a made your bed, so lie in it.........
