Cape Town - President Thabo Mbeki is to give up one day's salary this month to make a contribution to a youth solidarity fund for development projects.
Speaking in his Budget vote in the National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, Mbeki noted the recent growth and development summit which backed
the youth sector call for contributions to a voluntary youth solidarity fund "where all employed youth will be invited by youth organisations to contribute one day's gross salary to youth development programmes."
Speaking on his birthday - he turned 61 today - he said: "Since I am part of this employed youth, Zanele Mbeki (the first lady) and I have agreed that I should contribute one day's gross salary to the projected youth solidarity
fund."
"This I will be doing during this our youth month," he told Members of Parliament at the start of two days of debate on his Budget Vote.
