ACDP welcomes apparent JSC decision

2011-09-05 17:02
Cape Town - The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has welcomed the Judicial Service Commission's apparent endorsement of Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng as the next chief justice.

"Their vote is an acceptance of Justice Mogoeng’s reply to his critics that he is neither homophobic nor insensitive to gender-based violence," party president Kenneth Meshoe said.

"We do not doubt Mogoeng’s commitment to judicial ethics and independence, and his upholding of the Constitution."

The JSC had by Monday afternoon not yet officially revealed its stance on Mogoeng, a member of the Winners Chapel International church.

Mogoeng was questioned about his religious views during his interview for the post by the JSC at the weekend.

He told the commission on Sunday that God wanted him to be appointed to the position. He said he prayed and got a signal that "it was the right thing to do" after President Jacob Zuma nominated him.

A JSC commissioner, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Sunday JSC members had voted in Mogoeng's favour.

Meshoe said on Monday the ACDP was of the view that those who doubted Mogoeng's suitability would be convinced, over time, that he would do an excellent job.

"His endorsement by the JSC as future chief justice will make it easier for the president to formally appoint him in the next few days."
