ANC, DA councillors in brick assault

2011-12-22 23:01

Cape Town - The ANC in the Western Cape accused a DA councillor of attacking the Cederberg mayor with a brick on Thursday, a claim denied by the DA.

ANC provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile called it a "gangster style brutal attack".

"The ANC in the Western Cape unconditionally condemns this morning's attempted murder/assault on the Cederberg mayor Jonas White by a brick wielding DA councillor," he said in a statement.

Mjongile claimed councillor Jimmy Barnard photographed White when he stopped in Velddrif, near St Helena Bay, on business, and then attacked him.

DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane denied these claims, saying the opposite was true.

"The ANC's facts are wrong. The attack was by the mayor. The mayor attacked the councillor, and his family can attest to this."

When asked if the two men had been involved in a fight, police spokesperson Captain Frederick confirmed that two cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm were opened earlier on Thursday. He, however, declined to name the two.

"All I can say is that police were alerted to a fight at Laaiplek. Two gents had a fight and they have registered a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm against each other."

If you are going to use a brick, atleast knock the guy out...

      Malcolm - 2011-12-23 06:10

Must have been a provocation from the ANC side. They are well known for being cowards and agressive when pushed in a corner. And no debating skills whatsoever.

      Anthony - 2011-12-23 08:03

wonder what happened to the good old baseball bat?

      Rebel_without_a_cause - 2011-12-23 08:12

@Malcolm. Do you realize that you just found the DA councillor guilty of assault. There are more involved. At this stage, based on the report, we don't even know who attacked who. Don't be surprised if a cellphone photo or some other evidence appears during the investigation that puts a new slant on this story.

      Kala - 2011-12-23 09:07

Mud slinging and brick throwing... This is not the way to build houses chaps.

I am sorry ANC, but the DA members are decent human beings unlike yourselves! I wonder what happened in Luthuli house the other day huh? Havoc erupted! Go point fingers at your own people!

      Sharkshoot - 2011-12-23 15:28

This is concrete proof that foundations have to be built to bridge the structures of trust between these people to construct a pillar of understanding with all pillars of government.

  • Peter - 2011-12-22 23:22

So that's why we pay these philanderers! To beat each other with bricks whilst the country is drowning in corruption!! What a waste ... when do they actually start WORKING for the people and not their personal agendae??!!??

      Hunter - 2011-12-23 05:24

Assuming Mr. Barnard tried to photograph some wrong doing by Mr. White, which triggered the attack. Only assuming, since very little facts are reported here.

      AyGeewils - 2011-12-23 09:28

This is the future of our political landscape - no character, no restriant, no statesmanship and no hope of success if this is what cross party encounters can come to.

Idiots that run Local Councils,Provinces and the country have nothing better to do than to attack one another in any form, instead of making the country better, and they are paid huge salary's to do this. Have always said that these people are only there to look after their own interest.

Typical politicians - it wasn't me - now they will blame the brick.

  • Clinton - 2011-12-23 06:42

You know you are in Africa when people who should be setting examples attack eachother with bricks. Ha ha!

      Marcia - 2011-12-23 17:48

You are so right! Setting the good example by the leaders of any nation. How do they expect the people to behave civilized when the leaders are hooligans.

  • Grant - 2011-12-23 07:14

How I wish there'd been independant witnesses preferably with video cell phones.

  • Zion - 2011-12-23 07:22

Rather disconcerting to read that our leaders on both sides have taken themselves to the level of street thugs. Hell, beating each other with a brick then running to the cops and mommy to sort the naughty boys out. Absolutely pathetic. Helen better start getting her ducks in a line with some sort of civilized discipline. Nothing can be done about the ANC cadres they are thugs anyway.

      Chum Scrubber - 2011-12-23 07:28

You wonder what sort of screening process is involved in order to be a politician. These sort of people in positions of authority - makes one wonder why we have so little faith in them.

      Bianca-Anne - 2011-12-23 08:37

It is foolish to assume that all ANC Cadres are tugs and all DA "Cadres" are civilized ... it is stereotyping in the worse kind - I always believed if you a thug - you are a thug no matter what you political view are. Whether you ANC, DA, +FF, AWB ... whatever - if you are acting like a thug it is because that is who you are - nothing to do with politics. But it seems that only ANC members can be thugs ... that is stereotyping and unfair on cadres that are actually well behaved. But good to see that it is not only the ANC members that are not undiscipline - that those opposing the ANC are the biggest thugs as well.

      Chum Scrubber - 2011-12-23 15:50

Bianca, I guess the ANC guys have earned the stereotype more though, would you not agree?

  • Dino - 2011-12-23 07:22

    WTF?

      Heinrich - 2011-12-23 09:17

This is the question on everybody's lips, Dino. Since time immemorial our people have been grappling with this taunting enigma. Many explanations have been put forward, but the real answer still eludes us. Who Trew First? Won The Fight? I don't think we will ever know. Perhaps we should put it to the people to vote.

  • Daft - 2011-12-23 08:13

Looks like the guys are getting soft now !...Where are ur bleddy guns....Lets have some action !!!

  • Oceanh - 2011-12-23 08:49

  • mholthuysen - 2011-12-23 08:57

But a brick is the new way to communicate in politics in South Africa - weren't they used at the Limpopo Conference and in uMtata recently?

      Dane - 2011-12-23 09:25

I think it was......Julius who got the tender for Brick supply! ;)

  • Jeffrey - 2011-12-23 08:59

  • Fredster - 2011-12-23 09:18

    Hard mud slinging!!!

  • Dane - 2011-12-23 09:19

WOW, so the ANC has always got an issue with the media and there "Wrong" reporting............But look who ran to the press first to throw accusations!

  • Craig - 2011-12-23 09:38

Two gents? gentlemen do not have street brawls, scumbag politicians maybe.

  • Mike - 2011-12-23 10:33

As I have said before, normal civilised government would purchase weapons from Armscor. Our politicians get theirs from Brickor.

  • Tahir - 2011-12-23 10:50

The current state of politics in the Western Cape is fractured and at best on knifes-edge. This is mostly because of the DA's push to create their very own federal state - to prove whatever it is they want to prove. This is bad for the Western Cape and bad for the country.

      Dane - 2011-12-23 11:39

....With that said, the so called "federal state" you just mentioned happens to be the best run province in SA!

  • MoAfrika - 2011-12-23 11:13

ijoo ANC always disagree, they never have fought anyone outside the party itself, as for the brick, classic!!! this goes without saying, if some pigs were in leadership, we would still be killed. I know it will kill u to acknowledge & even condemn my opinion, but deep in your heart, you just cant wait...sies...truth hurts neh!!!!!

  • Christo - 2011-12-23 11:49

Gee hulle elkeen n mes en n bottel wyn!!! Dis mos deel van hul kultuur? Watter voorbeeld is dit nou vir die gemeenskap wat hulle moet dien? Die ANC en die DA kan maar van die barbare ontslae raak.

  • David - 2011-12-23 12:20

Another typical attack by the disgusting anc members on another party official, the colonials certianly did not do a good enough job to get them up to speed with the rest of the world This is an African thing throughout the continent wish RSA could be different but I have my doubts

  • Shirley - 2011-12-23 13:11

Just amother brick OUT the wall!

  • Marius - 2011-12-23 13:29

The ANC aren't even indigenous to the Western Cape! They are being brought here in bus-loads from elsewhere to try and oust the DA. Get out of the Western Cape, you ANC losers, go home!

  • Yurak - 2011-12-23 16:24

"ANC provincial secretary Spongebob Mjongile called it a "gangster style brutal attack"." You are the last one to call anything "gangster style", the new anc is the bigest gangsters around nowdays

  • jerry.pres - 2011-12-23 18:05
