ANC, DA councillors in brick assault
Cape Town - The ANC in the Western Cape accused a DA councillor of attacking the Cederberg mayor with a brick on Thursday, a claim denied by the DA.
ANC provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile called it a "gangster style brutal attack".
"The ANC in the Western Cape unconditionally condemns this morning's attempted murder/assault on the Cederberg mayor Jonas White by a brick wielding DA councillor," he said in a statement.
Mjongile claimed councillor Jimmy Barnard photographed White when he stopped in Velddrif, near St Helena Bay, on business, and then attacked him.
DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane denied these claims, saying the opposite was true.
"The ANC's facts are wrong. The attack was by the mayor. The mayor attacked the councillor, and his family can attest to this."
When asked if the two men had been involved in a fight, police spokesperson Captain Frederick confirmed that two cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm were opened earlier on Thursday. He, however, declined to name the two.
"All I can say is that police were alerted to a fight at Laaiplek. Two gents had a fight and they have registered a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm against each other."
