Polokwane - The ANC provincial task team (PTT) in Limpopo is preparing branches for its elective conference this weekend, it said on Tuesday.

The task team was visiting branches in the province's five regions to ensure that they were ready for the conference, PTT spokesperson Sello Lediga said.

"The ANC is going to conference, officials are busy presiding over the BGMs [branch general meetings] in all the regions."

The task team has been running the province since March last year when former premier Cassel Mathale's executive was disbanded by Luthuli House.

The elective conference was supposed to be held in December last year but was postponed because two regions, Peter Mokaba and Waterberg, had disputes and political bickering.

The disputes forced the Peter Mokaba regional conference to wait for a court to decide if the election of Transport MEC Lehlohonolo Masoga's leadership was legitimate.

The Waterberg region was still facing allegations of manipulation of the election processes.

Only Vhembe, Sekhukhune and Mopani had legitimate structures.

The conference is expected to elect a provincial leader.

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha and his rival, Public Works MEC Dickson Masemola, were up for the position of chairperson.

Masemola and Mathabatha are supporters of President Jacob Zuma, and both successfully backed his re-election at the ANC's Mangaung conference in 2012.

Lediga said over 600 branches had until Wednesday to finalise their BGMs so that the conference could go ahead as planned.
