East London - The ANC has involved itself in the distribution of food parcels in parts of the Eastern Cape ahead of municipal by-elections, according to a report.

The Times reported on Friday that residents claimed an ANC candidate had handed food parcels to destitute families, asking them to vote for the party.

According to the residents, ANC officials took them to the offices of the SA Social Services Agency (Sassa), where they allegedly collected the food parcels consisting of rice, flour, maize meal, samp, beans, cooking oil, canned fish and sugar.

One resident told The Times that an ANC candidate had visited her and asked her to vote for the ANC, telling her that food parcels would be distributed. She claimed she agreed because she needed the food.

A Sassa representative confirmed to the newspaper that food parcels were distributed, but denied this was in order to garner votes for the ANC. The ANC in the province also denied the party was using food parcels to influence the outcome of the by-elections.
