Johannesburg - The ANC's national executive committee (NEC) has established the party's integrity committee and approved guidelines, secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Monday.

The commission would be chaired by Rivonia trialist and former Robben Island prisoner Andrew Mlangeni, Mantashe told reporters in Johannesburg.

Other members of the commission were Frene Ginwala, Nelson Diale, Gertrude Shope, Ahmed Kathrada, Rashida Abdullah, Mendi Msimang, Sophie De Bruyn, Jethro Ndlovu, Dennis Goldberg, Lindelwe Mabandla and Nokukhanya Jele, who would form the commission secretariat.

Mantashe said the secretariat would be expanded to increase the research capacity of the integrity commission.

The committee was set up during a three-day NEC meeting held in Irene, south of Pretoria, at the weekend.

At its national conference in Mangaung last year, the ANC resolved to set up the integrity commission at all levels of the organisation.

This was also a resolution taken at its national general council in 2010.

"More urgent steps should be taken to protect the image of the organisation and enhance its standing in society by ensuring, among others, that urgent action is taken to deal with public officials, leaders and members of the ANC who face damaging allegations of improper conduct," the ANC said in its Mangaung policy resolutions.

"The ANC can no longer allow prolonged processes that damage its integrity."

Mantashe said the NEC also discussed and approved the national presenters with regards to the national disciplinary committee.

The national presenters were the people who presented the NEC's case at an internal disciplinary.

The presenters were: Uriel Abrahamse, Andries Nel, Gcina Malindi, and Mahlape Sello.
