Johannesburg - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said it was humbled on Thursday by the trust South Africans had in the party, after retaining its wards in recent by-elections.

"The massive gap between the ANC and other parties is a strong indication that people appreciate the work being done by the ANC in the provincial government and the municipalities it leads," it said in a statement.

"We call on the people to work with our councillors. We also pledge to ensure that councillors work and remain accountable to the people."

By-elections were held in eight wards across five provinces on Wednesday.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the African National Congress retained ward two in Dududa, ward six in Mandeni, and ward 12, also in Mandeni.

Four by-elections were scheduled to take place in KwaZulu-Natal. However the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Monday local government MEC Nomusa Dube was asked to postpone the by-election in ward 39, eThekwini.

This was after allegations of voter registration fraud. The ward was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Upcoming elections

The ANC said the results indicated what would happen in next year's general elections.

"We once again appeal to all young people to get IDs and register to vote," it said.

"This is the only way our youth will be counted among those who defended and advanced freedom, democracy, and development."

The ANC also retained ward four in the Mutale municipality, Limpopo, and the Democratic Alliance retained ward four in the Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) municipality, also in Limpopo.

In the Eastern Cape and Free State, by-elections were held in ward two in Alice and ward four in Ladybrand respectively.

Both were retained by the ANC.

Ward 14 in George, in the Western Cape, was contested by candidates of the ANC, DA, the Independent Civic Organisation of SA, and the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners (Concerned Local Residents).

The DA retained that ward.
