Johannesburg - The Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) is backing President Jacob Zuma for a second term as ANC leader.

"We will support Kgalema Motlanthe for deputy president, but if he contests the [presidency], the conference resolved to support comrade Cyril Ramaphosa [for deputy president]," chairman Kebby Maphatsoe told reporters in Johannesburg.

This was a decision taken at the MKMVA's national conference held in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, at the weekend.

Maphatsoe said the MKMVA wanted secretary general Gwede Mantashe and national chairperson Baleka Mbete to retain their positions.

However, it wanted Jessie Duarte to take over as deputy secretary general from Thandi Modise and Zweli Mkhize to take over as treasurer general from Mathews Phosa.

"Conference supports these comrades based on their history, the role they played in the ANC and MK, the role they continue to play in building cohesion and unity in the ANC, alliance and government, and the achievements of government under their leadership," said Maphatsoe.

The ANC holds its national elective conference in Mangaung in December.
