Cape Town – Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale and North West Premier Thandi Modise are likely to get axed as the ANC tries to clean up its image ahead of next year's elections.

According to the Sunday Independent, there has also been a strong push to fire Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet. Four ANC national executive committee members this week told the newspaper the ANC would sack the three premiers by next month.

ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza denied there were plans to oust Mathale, saying he had no idea where those "speculations" came from.

Should Mathale be axed, ANC national executive committee member Dikeledi Magadzi, Limpopo's ANC task team treasurer Thembi Nwedamutswu or Stan Mathabatha are tipped to succeed him.

An NEC member said this week that the North West presented a serious challenge for the party and that the only way to fix the province was by removing Modise.

The changes are mooted as part of the ANC's grand plan to retain a majority vote next year amid fears that the emergence of new opposition parties and the DA’s strong drive could reduce its majority.

Zuma's unexpected and unexplained reshuffle of his national executive this week, in which he fired three ministers and redeployed deputy ministers, is said to be the ruling party’s first clampdown on problem areas.
