ANC to discuss Zuma probe

Johannesburg - A proposed commission of inquiry into claims of a plot against Jacob Zuma will form part of talks at the ANC's national executive committee meeting this weekend.
The meeting, which starts in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon, would largely concentrate on the upcoming local government elections, said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama.
He said the commission would be discussed when President Thabo Mbeki presented his broad political overview.
Mbeki proposed the commission in a letter to a meeting attended by the ANC and its alliance partners convened last month to discuss the Zuma saga.
He said the alliance should set up the commission to establish whether "members of the ANC and broad democratic movement, including the president of the ANC, had been and are involved in a conspiracy targeted at marginalising or destroying deputy president Zuma".
Ngonyama said earlier this week the ANC's national working committee meeting in Johannesburg had agreed in principle to the commission.
However the SACP and Cosatu have both rejected the commission. They believe it won't address the broader problems facing the alliance and the problems which have arisen regarding the treatment of Zuma.
Some members of the alliance believe there is a politically inspired conspiracy to stop Zuma from becoming the next president of the ANC. He is seen by some as being too close to the working class.
After the weekend's meeting, it is expected a date will be set for the next alliance meeting where the commission will be discussed in detail.
