Johannesburg - The ANC is concerned about the growing crisis of youth unemployment across Africa, according to documents released ahead of its national general council.

"The growing discontent amongst the youth in the continent could... result in social upheavals, violence, and therefore deepening political instability," it says.

The NGC, to be held in October, will assess progress made in implementing resolutions taken at the ANC’s last elective congress, in Mangaung in December 2012.

More needs to be done to make the economy more productive, it says.

As part of youth development efforts, the ANC wants Portuguese, French, Spanish, and Arabic to be taught in schools. This will enable pupils to work at organisations of which South Africa is a member, like the African Union, United Nations, and International Labour Organisation.

No mention however, is made of introducing Mandarin, which will be taught in schools from next year. Teachers’ union Sadtu has warned this is a new form of colonialism.

The ANC says subjects like African history and "liberation history" need to be taught in the foundation phase at schools to produce "proudly African citizens in South Africa".

The party wants government to create programmes for young people to further their education in Africa and abroad. Emphasis should be given to having them study those fields that will provide the skills the country needs.
