Johannesburg - The ANC Women's League has nominated President Jacob Zuma to retain his position as ANC leader at the party's national conference in Mangaung.

"President Jacob Zuma has never failed us as women in terms of the things that we want to achieve," African National Congress Women's League president Angie Motshekga told reporters in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The league chose Cyril Ramaphosa to take over from deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe.

Several ANC branches, as well as the ANC Youth League, had nominated Motlanthe for president. He had not yet stated whether he would accept the nominations.

Motshekga said because the league had nominated Ramaphosa, it did not mean it was trying to malign Motlanthe.

"It is just a choice... it has nothing to do with him [Motlanthe] as a person. So it is not an anti-Motlanthe vote."

The league wanted to retain Baleka Mbete as ANC chairperson and Gwede Mantashe as secretary general.

Jessie Duarte was nominated as deputy secretary general and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize as treasurer.

Motshekga said the ANCWL supported Zuma, despite criticism by others of his traditional views.

The ANCWL president, who also served as basic education minister, denied rumours that Zuma did not fire her for the late delivery of textbooks in Limpopo because he needed to secure the league's vote in Mangaung.

Latest comment in South Africa

Franky Mark says... Hi Anthony, I yet again enjoy reading your comments and am going to give you a thumbs up just for your effort! Although your comment has yet again not much to do with article - and good news for your particular political views (supporting the current government) is are far and in between. Firstly = I am glad that a South African ( Be it from the Afrikaner tribe or any other.) is successful. He did not made his money from tender corruption as so many other has. He created work - and even entertainment for you - seeing that you spend so much time on news24. He help South Africans with political dialogue-- as me and you are doing. And back to the Broederbond - FW de Klerk was in the Broederbond - so you can see what their political motivation is. Secretive - man that cause a problem because if the highly capable Minister of State Security - the honorable Mr Cwele doesnt even know that his wife is a drug runner and that the Gupta's are influencing our government - what chance does he have of infiltrating this secretive Arikaaners and stop them from creating wealth. Why don't you post the income from the owners of The New Age.... oh yes because its your prez'z buddies ! Read the article...
