ANCWL to fight patriarchy at conference

2012-06-26 10:30

Johannesburg - The ANC Women's League vowed on Tuesday to knock patriarchy on its "ugly head" at the ANC's policy conference this week.

"The ANCWL is committed to deal decisively with patriarchy wherever it threatens to raise its ugly head across all the discussion documents," ANC Women's League spokesperson Troy Martens said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The league believes that patriarchy is a major contributing factor for many of the social ills that exist in our society including gender-based violence as well as a lack of participation by women in the economy and the stifling of women rights."

Martens said the ANCWL's contribution to the gender policy document on the aspects of justice, safety, rural development and economic development had the potential to better the lives of women.

The ANC's four-day policy conference opens on Tuesday with an address by President Jacob Zuma, followed by a closed plenary session at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Martens said the ANCWL would deal with the economic transformation discussion document in order to promote the economic development of women.

"Women need to be a priority in economic development in order to destroy the face of poverty in the country," she said.

"Due to the dire economic situation many rural women are often trapped in situations of abuse.... Poverty and gender-based violence is one of the issues that needs to be addressed by the policy conference."

Input at the conference would be received on three of the ANC's main policy documents: organisational renewal, strategy and tactics; the state's intervention in the mining sector; and the national development plan and commission guidelines.

Will the ANCWL stay true to their tribal and ethnic traditions, submitting to the men of their tribes? Allowing their men to continue to rule? This is, after all, the African way.

Indeed... There are more pressing issues in politics than patriarchy in any case. The ANCWL needs to speak up about something else.

Yes I stand side by side with the ancwl. It is a good idea nd it will bring about change in s.a when this matter is addressed. It should be less of patriarchy and more of patriarchy matriarchy workinf together for a better south africa

Sadly I think it is like farting against thunder, but I'm glad they are giving it a try. Changing patriarchal attitudes takes many decades. It is even still evident, albeit to a lesser degree, in so called civilised western societies.

The ANCWL must first wait to see if the men will allow them to speak at the conference. I don't have much hope.Just another waste of air.

Good for them! Women need to be shown to be fighting gender inequality if they want the situation to change. Inaction leads to more inaction and the continuation of the status quo. I support the idea of women in power wholeheartedly. I think there is a good chance that this country would be better off if we had a female president for example. All the best of success to the ANC Women's League on this matter.
