SA does not rank last for maths and science - expert

2014-06-09 10:50

While South Africa's maths and science literacy rates are astoundingly low, economist and education researcher Nicholas Spaull says our country does not rank last, as indicated by the World Economic Forum.WATCH

Johannesburg - Education has improved in South Africa, the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal said on Sunday in a statement ahead of Youth Day.

"[This is] thanks to the ANC which has since 1994 prioritised education and ensured that the state of schools and the quality of education received the attention it needed," African National Congress Youth League provincial task team convener Nontembeko Boyce said.

"As a result, millions of children are now receiving free quality education."

On 16 June 1976, thousands of high-school students in Soweto protested for a better education system and this will be commemorated on Monday.

Pupils clashed with police resulting in deaths and injuries in the days that followed.

"The ANCYL in KwaZulu-Natal salutes the role these young people played in contributing to the overthrow of the oppressive apartheid regime.

"Their heroic actions which saw many young people losing their lives led to the freedoms that we as South Africans enjoy today," Boyce said.
