ANCYL helps at Afrikaner-run home for aged

2012-07-18 15:52

Johannesburg - ANC Youth League members did volunteer work on Wednesday at a family welfare organisation in Khutsong on the West Rand run by an Afrikaner women's body.

They did so as part of their 67-minute contribution to mark former president Nelson Mandela's birthday on Wednesday.

SA Vrouefederasie regional manager for Carletonville, Suzette Oosthuizen, said: "There were a lot of people."

She said the league visited a centre for the aged in the area and helped with the food gardens, which residents had been struggling to establish.

"For the elderly to work in the garden is a challenge," said Oosthuizen.

They enjoyed having the young people over. "We should have it more often," she said. Her wish was that someone would make a year-long commitment to help out.

League spokesperson Khusela Sangoni-Khawe said: "As much as we speak about economic freedom, we understand the key components are about looking after people in general, including the elderly."

It was irrelevant that the family welfare organisations they visited were run by Afrikaners.

"I don't think the divisions in our society are such that we [should] forget that we are one people," she said.

Every year on Mandela's birthday, people are encouraged to donate 67 minutes of their time to some form of community service in his honour.

Now this is what the ANCYL should be doing, helping with something constructive and not destructive,Hats off to you.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 16:10

      Even I'm impressed.

      Christelle - 2012-07-18 16:12

I agree Julian. I also hope these guys saw that the Afrikaner is not the enemey - people generally have a desire to stand together and make our country work. Starting at this level is encouraging

      Niel.Kal - 2012-07-18 16:19

I wander what King Julius did today... Thank you ANCYL, nobody can argue with positive , honest actions..well done..

      clinton.badenhorst - 2012-07-18 16:20

They have a hidden agenda...!!! Get them out now! Never trust the ANCYL!!!

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 16:23

@ Bardy. Thinking aloud again :) I was going to suggest that they were merely " casing the joint " or in it for the food. But what the hell, lets give them the benifit of the doubt. Afterall there is some good in almost everyone, even if it does take a special occasion to bring it out !

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-07-18 16:30

Maybe they were just casing the joint. LOL!!! Okay, I couldn't resist. I'm shocked too. Well done ANCYL, keep it up!

      john.loveland.9 - 2012-07-18 16:32

I would be more impressed if the YL helped out at an old age home in a place like Krugersdorp as opposed to Khutsong, where the residents may be white.... I don't think it matters who runs it.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-07-18 16:40

True that John, or maybe the ANCYL could go build a high school in Oranje, that would really be sending a message.

      rowen.loretz - 2012-07-18 16:41

      It must be snowing?

      rontheogre - 2012-07-18 17:00

Now if this is the result, I say let us celebrate Nelson Mandela's birthday every day.

      sharon.a.marks.9 - 2012-07-19 09:20

they better check if anything is missing

      Malose-Nyatlo - 2012-07-21 19:19

...and also encouraging the youth to get a degree...

      Clint Thorpe - 2013-05-24 14:54

Is it not obvious that this is all happening in the run up to elections next year...take off your blinkers!

  • sibiya.nqubeko - 2012-07-18 15:56

ANCYL helps at "AFRIKANER"-run home for aged. News24 loves controversies...

      drishworth - 2012-07-18 16:16

I stand to be corrected but as far as I know, Khutsong is a Black township so I am assuming that the old age home is for Black people - which is being run 365 days a year by White Afrikaaner women - so what is so great about the Black youth going to lend a hand for 67 minutes to help their own kind?

      Christelle - 2012-07-18 16:23

Drishworth, we have such division in our country (and a lot of it created by leadership)that it is enlightning for us to see that the YL, who is constantly busy with "wartalk" is helping a white woman who is helping elderly black people. And I don't think we should talk about "their own kind" At the end of the day, we are all of the same kind - humankind....

      drishworth - 2012-07-18 16:39

I agree with you Christelle that with so much bad mouthing going on, and dare I say with so much of it directed at the 'disgusting' Afrikaaner, - it was heartening to read this article but I was making a very valid comment that we shouldn't be fawning all over these people for doing what they did for 67 minutes - a lot of South Africans today have devoted 67 minutes of their time to a valuable cause - what makes what they did so special? As SOTOBE pointed out, NEWS24 was highly controversial in their headline - they highlighted the divide between Black and White - perhaps the headline should have read 'ANCYL help out at Khutsong Old Age Home' - and then perhaps slipped into the story the fact that it is run by Afrikaaner women.

  • peter.ndamase - 2012-07-18 16:00

"20 likes" for this young lions. Keep pushing the main agenda.

      tommo.too - 2012-07-18 21:50

sorry mate, you got twenty dislikes. And....

      digger.dighead - 2013-02-25 02:58

What agenda peter??? Oh yes the Malema agenda...go on and at the same time move to Zim and leave the rest of us to try and build a new South Africa. As for the ANCYL, well done keep up the positive actions and you will receive positive reactions...

  • gavin.lott.9 - 2012-07-18 16:01

That's how things can change if we ALL work together...!

  • trevor.pietersen.3 - 2012-07-18 16:03

Now this is fantastic news...well done..ANCYL

  • Gregory Jurgens - 2012-07-18 16:06

    Nice one guys .

  • andrew.whale.39 - 2012-07-18 16:09

Back to 'hating on everything' for the next 8759 hours of the year... Why is this even news?

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-07-18 16:15

"Why is this even news" - Because it may be the first constructive thing the ANCYL has done that has been reported on. I dont care who they are helping but that they are doing good. The thing youth need to understand is that you don't get and then give. You are meant to give of yourself and then you get. A very difficult lesson to learn for anyone.

      Christelle - 2012-07-18 16:25

Andrew, we need good news! Period! Lebeau - the madam is too busy sorting out the crap caused by the ANC in Limpopo. She is many things, but not an octopus - she cannot have her hands everywhere.

      andrew.whale.39 - 2012-07-18 16:32

Rob : "Because it may be the first constructive thing the ANCYL..", it's not at their own initiative. They're just being seeing as doing something for 67 minutes which in complete juxtaposition to the way they ordinarily conduct themselves. Lebeau: This isn't about political alignment. This is about a whole nation of people who know better with regards to what the ANCYL do and say verses an hour in a day in an entire year, and people are singing their praises? It's insanity. If this sort of thing was part of their usual undertaking I'd be more inclined to offer positive comments.

      dieter.erxleben.1 - 2012-07-18 16:33

Hatefull Supporters come on Lebeau how many DA songs are there about shooting people?

      andrew.whale.39 - 2012-07-18 16:36

@Christelle.J Yes, we need good news. I agree with you wholeheartedly. But what we don't need are gestures for the sake of gesturing. And that's what this is. This isn't a change in the way the ANCYL is going to conduct themselves at any future juncture.

      mphozana.manfred - 2012-07-18 16:43

Andrew, we dont need your twisted positive comments, just shove them, where it is warm.

      andrew.whale.39 - 2012-07-18 16:48

mphozana.manfred Thank you for your highly cerebral contribution to this thread! I shall take it under advisement.

      Christelle - 2012-07-18 16:52

Andrew, I agree with your last comment - what is a fact is the YL did not do this of their own accord - it is inspired by the 67 minutes for Madiba. What we constantly hear though, is that the YL is busy with the nonsense we know they are constantly busy with. I think we all just want to enjoy basking in a bit of good news for a change. Whether they are going to change their attitude as a group, I don't believe so. But one person could spoken to an elderly about how this "white" woman is helping them, and that could change that person's attitude. It just takes one person at a time you know.

      andrew.whale.39 - 2012-07-18 17:00

Christelle, I think we've found a mutual understanding! Thank you :)

  • sbu.mahwai - 2012-07-18 16:12

Ok please News24 stop it now - the headline should have been "ANCYL helps home for aged, its irrelevant to point out that its Afrikaner-run. Anyway thats commendable from the ANCYL

      Thanduxolo Galada - 2012-07-18 17:19

Chief: News24 benefits from Ad Revenue. The business is pulling people on their platforms and sell that to advertisers. They couldn't be bothered about the hate speech going on here. You don't have to be the sharpest pencil in the tool box to see this. Unethical actually.

@News 24, where is the articles about all the Afrikaners that help at black schools, creches and elderly homes.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 16:26

Unfortunately the good that whites do is very rarely mentioned. Credit is not given where it is due. Perhaps it is expected & not worthy of praise to those in the higher echelons.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-07-18 16:31

It was all over the radio stations this morning.

      nosiphom.mazibuko - 2012-07-18 16:36

Incidentally, it is mentioned, the home is run by a white afrikaner woman. Is that not good??

      louwc - 2012-07-18 16:39

This is a black old age home, just happens to be funded and managed by an Afrikaans Women's Federation.

  • peter.t.solomon - 2012-07-18 16:21

Even in my township I saw whites doing volunteer work at an old age home and other places. Politics and race aside, there is hope for race relations in SA.

      Christelle - 2012-07-18 17:03

Peter, I agree with you. I think we would be a whole lot better of with our race relations if the politicians don't fuel the division. If you generally see on grassroots level how people act towards each other, it's quite different to what the politicians make it out to be. Sometimes I wonder whether they use it as a tool to stay in power. Fuel the anger and you will carry on voting for us.

      tommo.too - 2012-07-18 21:55

This is sooooo cool Peter. Thanks for sharing bru...

      digger.dighead - 2013-02-25 03:10

Peter well said and Chris you are spot on...they don't want us to get along really and very seldom do you hear anything positive coming out of even the Presidents month. At the end of the day we need each other one way or the other and must work together.

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-07-18 16:38

It's sustainable 'good will' and future policies that count. Anyone can 'wear a hat' for 67 minutes to put a feather in it. I'm glad to hear this, but we all know it's skin deep.

Your assumption that your 'intellect' is superior to that of ANCYL supporters is unfounded and a sure sign of your stupidity!\r\n\r\nSuch comments, from people like yourself, are the reason unity in our beautiful country will not be possiple.\r\n\r\nThere's nothing superior about you!

      digger.dighead - 2013-02-25 03:29

beki.khumalo, how far back do you want to start comparing the differences between European and African? Do you really what to go down that road? No, no I feel way too good right now to respond to your comment and will leave it for some other time!! Anyway, as for your opinion that unity will never be "possiple" you are wrong. There is already lots of that going around with many different people in this beautiful country of ours...

What a blatantly obvious bit of politicking that can only be laughed at! They really are making mamparas of themselves, everything they do just shows them up even more! Hahahahahaha
