Polokwane - The ANC Youth League in Limpopo warned residents of Seshego, outside Polokwane, on Thursday of a scam abusing leader Julius Malema's name.
"These crooks who pretend to be community leaders, are robbing our people of their hard-earned money under the pretence of giving them land," said African National Congress Youth League provincial secretary Lebogo Jacob.
"They are collecting money from innocent people, alleging that they are going to allocate stands to them at the [fictitious] Julius Malema Park."
He said several people had contacted the youth league's office about this.
"Some are alleging that they paid R500, some say they paid R200," said Jacob.
'Greedy chance-takers'
The "community leaders" told people they would give them a piece of land at the "Julius Malema Park" in return for money.
"We wish to put it on record that the ANCYL and its president have no relationship with these thugs and their illegal project.
"The so-called Julius Malema Park is nothing more than a ploy by greedy chance-takers who should be ashamed of themselves for cheating grannies out of their insufficient pension monies in order to maintain their uncontrollable appetite for easy wealth," said Jacob.
He said the ANCYL had informed the municipality of the scam.
The Limpopo police said they had not received any reports about this.
