Accountability is 'more than probes'
Pretoria - Public accountability should be about more than corruption probes by the public protector and the auditor general, the protector said in Pretoria on Wednesday.
"Good governance involves public accountability," Thuli Madonsela said in a lecture at the Tshwane University of Technology in Soshanguve.
"Public accountability is not just about the public protector and the auditor general getting involved."
She said there was a need for the country's citizens to be involved at the start of projects undertaken by government departments.
This would promote accountability from the start of such projects and not when the public protector and the auditor general were called in to investigate.
She said the lack of young people's involvement in the governments of the Middle East had led to a wave of revolutionary protests in the Arab world, dubbed the Arab Spring.
Madonsela urged the young to "engage with the state" to avoid such a scenario.
"It is no longer true to say that young people are [only] tomorrow's leaders. You don't need to be desperate as [was the case] with the Arab Spring."
Madonsela said the writers of South Africa's Constitution had envisaged consultation between the state and its citizens.
