Durban - The African National Congress in the eThekwini unicity condemned a Democratic Alliance councillor who produced a pink G-string in the council chamber during a debate on Monday.
ANC regional secretary John Mchunu said DA councillor Geoff Pullan "displayed a woman's G-string underwear while Minority Front councillor Visvin Reddy was speaking".
"This took place in full view of the speaker, Nomusa Dube, councillors and members of the public in the gallery.
"The ANC views this action as racially motivated since we are convinced that, by so doing, Pullan is equating the Indian community to underwears."
The ANC called on the council to "take strong action against Pullan", and for the DA to reprimand him and apologise to the Indian community.
Pullan said he had been "pulling Reddy's leg". He said Reddy had been quoted in the Sunday Times as describing members of his (Reddy's) family with whom he was having a dispute as "panties and pillowcases".
So, Pullan had dabbed at his face with the G-string as a joke.
Pullan said members of Reddy's party had laughed at the incident.
"It was naughty of me, I admit. But sometimes I think we take ourselves too seriously."
Pullan apologised to the speaker and left the chamber.
