Alliance 'needs strengthening'

Johannesburg - The tripartite alliance between the African National Congress, the SA Communist Party and Cosatu required some strengthening, ANC secretary-general Kgalema Motlanthe said on Monday.
Briefing the media on the ANC's national executive committee lekgotla held at the weekend, Motlanthe said a "better understanding" had to be fostered amongst the three partners.
"The lekgotla noted that the key to effective implementation of the ANC's programmes, both within and outside government, is ensuring the alliance and the democratic movement remains strong, united and cohesive."
Late last year the Congress of SA Trade Unions complained that the tripartite alliance was not functioning properly.
Cosatu complained that the delay in holding the summit had prevented the alliance from playing a political role.
Motlanthe announced that the alliance summit would be scheduled for April.
An alliance 10-a-side meeting would be held in March in preparation for the summit.
