Amnesty call centre waste of money - DA

2011-09-29 21:03

Johannesburg - An amnesty call centre set up by the department of public works is a waste of money, the DA said on Thursday.

"Given the lack of public response to the call centre, it's a complete waste of money," Democratic Alliance public works spokesperson John Steenhuisen said in a statement.

The centre was set up six months ago to help the department complete its audit of state land.

Steenhuisen said it was a good idea, but the department had not done enough to publicise the centre's services.

"The ministry needs to monitor the call centre carefully in order to make the accurate assessment of the facility's viability."

He said the DA would write to the minister of public works and request a full review of the centre.

"Should this facility still be operating under-capacity after this time, a decision will need to be taken regarding its future."

The department of public works could not immediately comment on the matter.

After the lease debacle, anything coming from Mahlangu-Nkabinda's department should be viewed with suspicion.

aaawwwwww.... Mahlangu-Nkabinda - self proclaimed corruption fighter... Lady i dont think you have a cooking clue how to run this department ... or any department for that matter!!! You lie to the people that you work for (South Africans), you think and act like you are above the law, you attempted to steal the tax payers money and then when you not trying to steal the money you just waste it on ‘well thought through’ plans like this ... I vote redeploy her to the correctional services... when she can ‘apply her mind’ to a inmate program where she could participate as an inmate!

This project was a beautiful idea without proper research and ended up theoretical and irrelevant.

But the call centre provides valuable employment for cadres who are otherwise unemployable. Now they have a place where they can sit on their arses all day playing solitaire without being bothered by phone calls.
