Johannesburg - A 53-year-old Msunduzi councillor was shot and killed at his home in the KwaNyavu area near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Colonel Jay Naicker said Elias Dube was killed on Tuesday by two men wearing balaclavas at about 23:00.

Three spent cartridges were recovered by police at the scene.

"The case will receive priority in terms of investigation and members from the provincial political violence task teams have been directed to take over the investigation," Naicker said.
