Boycott 'immoral' City Press, ANC urges

2012-05-24 18:45

Johannesburg - The ANC has called for a boycott of City Press until the removal of the "insulting portrait" of President Jacob Zuma from its website.

This follows a call by SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande earlier on Thursday for a boycott of the Sunday paper while addressing the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) elective conference on the Easter Rand.

"The City Press newspaper, by continuing to exhibit the offensive painting has clearly shown its collusion to the indecent depiction of President Zuma which violates his right to human dignity," the ANC says in a statement.

"The City Press has therefore become a paragon of immorality, abuse and perpetrator of injustice and slander.

"Their refusal to remove this portrait from their website and their controlled social media is a clear indication that this newspaper does not belong to our shared democratic dispensation and values.”

The ANC also says City Press is "anti-ANC, the President, our democracy and the majority of South Africans".

"It is our view that City Press has placed profiteering and populism before the principles enshrined in our constitution. City Press has missed an opportunity to prove to this country that they are indeed committed to our Constitution and its values."

Deeply disturbing

But the National Press Club has hit back, slamming "attacks" on the media by the ANC and government.

In a statement, the NPC refers to the City Press boycott as well as GCIS head Jimmy Manyi's criticism of eNews for not broadcasting the breakdown of Advocate Gcina Malindi during the court case over the Zuma painting on Thursday as examples of attacks on the media.

Said National Press Club chairperson Yusuf Abramjee: "The court ordered the media locally and internationally not to re-play the footage. It is therefore disingenuous for Manyi to hit out at the broadcaster."

Malindi broke down during the case in the South Gauteng High Court in which the ANC and Zuma are seeking to have the Brett Murray painting of Zuma, in which his genitals are exposed, declared unlawful.

"The attacks on the media are uncalled for and it's an emotional response", says Abramjee.

"The matter is before a court of law and to call for a boycott of the City Press is inappropriate. It will spur on more emotion and anger.

"We call on the ANC to retract its statement. The ANC has a responsibility not to continue raising the temperature over this controversial issue."

City Press editor-in-chief Ferial Haffajee earlier on Thursday described Nzimande's call for a boycott of the paper as "deeply disturbing".

"He must be very angry and that saddens me," she said, adding: "I am devastated by this week, by our descent into defacement and boycott over discussion and debate."

She said she had never claimed that her or City Press' freedom of expression is limitless. "But our right to publish and to free expression is constitutional."

      Craig - 2012-05-24 22:18

      joann.kotze - 2012-05-25 08:58

  • maggsnaidu - 2012-05-24 18:53

NOT A CHANCE! I will buy and encourage all my friends to buy too. It's absolute nonsense. I'm horrified at the behaviour of the ANC.

      George - 2012-05-24 20:27

Still horrified? Learn to expect the worse of the cANCer organization and you will never be disappointed. They have a certain talent.

  • sean.noble1 - 2012-05-24 18:54

Dont worry 90% of the ANC cant read so your sales figures are safe, but yes in true africanist fashion the goverment throw their toys out of the cot when something happens they dont like. I dare the ANC to call Ayanda Mabulu a racist since his painting is 10 times worse than this one. But not a peep from them becuase it was done by a black person. Hypocrites.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-24 19:07

90% yeah, Got any evidence or this just your estimation ?? This democracy is young and learning to adjust to this new way of living, This is true for the entire population. These Childish attempts at derailing our Progressive Democracy are irresponsible considering our History. Seems 18 years is not adequate to realize that with Democracy also comes Responsibility. Hope Murray is happy with the efforts. Image if these efforts were channeled in a Uniting act rather than a Dividing the populous. An example is required here to ensure others don't don't take thsi road to Purgatory.

      Adam - 2012-05-24 19:14

I agree with Tamaranui, it seems 18 years is not adequate to realise that with governing also comes responsbility.

      IcemanGP - 2012-05-24 19:28

Oh Fkk Adam, 18 years not sufficient to be responsible? The human race is a good couple of 1000yrs old. If you don't know responsibility now, you never will.

      Jack - 2012-05-24 19:32

I also agree with Tamaranui, even 200 years have made no difference in Haiti.

Censorship via social pressure. New one for the ANC. How much lower are they able to go?

      Isabel - 2012-05-24 19:56

All the way to the gutter, unfortunately. They all share one brain cell and it's damaged.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-24 18:59

"Our shared democratic dispensation and values.” What is the shared democratic dispensation and what are the values? I suppose the values do not include the theft of funds that actually belong to the public, the accepting of salary when no work of any consequence has actually been done, the use of business credit cards for personal purchases etc... I do not see that the ANC can actually claim anything on moral grounds - since the ANC is populated by immoral people - especially the president, who is immoral in the most blatant way. He may think his promiscuity impresses people, or that people are envious of it - when actually the opposite is true. He has made an absolute fool of himself and lost the respect of many.

  • Mark - 2012-05-24 19:01

Nzimande is blatantly using State-associated power in a disgracefully inapropriate manner. He is acting in the manner of an intellectually barren bully-boy. City Press is courageous and deserves all the support we, the public can give it.

      HugoMabasa - 2012-05-24 19:17

hau,is it not his right to mobilize like minded individuals?he did not threaten anyone and no one is forced to boycott as you have seen the comments above, some saying they will buy 20(lol)if I am offended, what should I do,boycott!

      Mewik - 2012-05-24 19:31

Don't stress, people like Hugo will continue to read their articles online, blissfully unaware of how badly they are failing at their boycott.

Hugo- Zuma's prostitute I assume you're using the word 'mind' in a very liberal sense.

      Mark - 2012-05-24 19:35

Our Constitutional Democracy dictates that the Courts are the final arbiter. This is why Zuma attempts to appoint "like minded individuals (Judges, by the way). He is undermining the Constitution.

      Isabel - 2012-05-24 20:02

Elect a government who is impoverishing you more every day. I have a job and a means to support myself. More and more black people can't say the same. Don't play the victim and blame us for your problems. Grow a brain and a pair of balls and learn to take care of yourself.

  • Gary - 2012-05-24 19:10

The ANC knew they would never win this case, in fact they want to lose it. The advocate crying was all part of the ploy to make this whole issue an emotional one. It's going perfectly to plan for them. If they can keep the masses angry at the minority who are pointing out their obvious faults, they are guaranteed a victory. It's disgusting, but ingenius.

      Riaan - 2012-05-24 19:36

I agree 100%. This is an answer to their prayers. They know they are losing support fast and this is the solution to their problems. The cynic in me will go so far as to say the whole thing was orchestrated.

  • keith.recore - 2012-05-24 19:11

knee jerk reactions and selective political outrage usually run their course in a relatively short amount of time. Eventually cooler heads prevail, the real issue is seen for what it is, life goes on. There will be other faux "disturbing" issues to come, in the interim. 4000 people live at Randonstein landfill, children without textbooks, millions unemployed, crime rates too high, basic services below par, court cases backlogged that are of real substance to everday South Africans, yet the "spear" is in court within days. Apparently it is about priorities or not???

wow, the ANC talking about morals... hahahahahahaha

      Press - 2012-05-25 01:11

Very clever way to circumvent the need for press sensorship - simply instruct the sheep not to buy the paper . . .

  • Mantsho - 2012-05-24 19:21

The more ANC people speak the more you can see what kind of people they are,l mean their true colour,They are pushing for their supporters to take up pangas and gungs to go out and cause problems, maybe to kill for Zuma, Sometimes l am beginning to agree with what once Margaret Thatcher said, that ANC is a terrorists organization.

  • jason.joao - 2012-05-24 19:22

Whether I agree with the painting or not, the ANC is (as always) behaving like a petulant child throwing all it's toys out the cot. Malema was not mistaken when he said he IS the ANC, they behave equally disgracefully to anything and anyone who doesn't agree with them, and towards anyone who doesn't follow their ways. If you're not ANC, if you're not black, if you're not blindly following and agreeing with them and their factions, you are automatically a racist, immoral, and going to hell. No matter what your beliefs are, no matter what the colour of your skin is (not that it's supposed to matter what skin colour you are in the first place!)

  • Bambanani - 2012-05-24 19:22

city press cant cry foul if people boycot this paper,it is their constitutional righs to do so,as much as they claim it is their rights to publish anything.if their not happy with the boycot they must go to the court.every one has rights,so the anc reserve the rights to tell its followers to boycot, those who dont follow the anc can buy and lets how many copies are sold on sunday,i suppose follwers of beeld, citizen will buy one copy of city press for moral support.

      Melusi - 2012-05-24 19:41

Their moral support will only last a week while our boycott can last till city press closes down, just ask Apartheid what strikes and boycotts did then city press is just a child's play

  • ChrisKhanye - 2012-05-24 19:26

Since the ANC Leadership are so loud mouthed - Why Not Call For the Life Style Audit Of the ANC's top 6 and all the NEC members? Why not call for the boycott of "immoral" Institutionalized Corruption harnessed under Zuma's tenure? Since ANC is also the beneficiary of Khulubuse Zuma's benevolence - why not shout at the top of your voice again and call for this "immoral hyena" to pay his former workers at Aurora? If You're Living in a Glass House, Don't Throw Stones!

  • jurgen.eksteen - 2012-05-24 19:28

The ANC cannot dictate to us what to read and not. There are newsworthy articles in the City Press, we have freedom of choice. The dictatorship will go a long way in brainwashing us, just because we lambasted the tastelessness of the article, does not mean we on the bandwagon. Same leadership, please!!!

      Bambanani - 2012-05-24 20:42

peter yuo sound really learned,u need to understand before you respond, the anc dont dictate or force you to boycot,u have the rights to buy anything including citypress, the anc is calling for anyone who agree with the anc to boycot this paper,DA,AFRIFORUM,ETC reserve the rights to buy, as much as city press reserve the rights to publish genitals,

  • Sidney Gilroy - 2012-05-24 19:32

The ANC is causing more damage to itself now than that painting could ever have dreamed to. Wait...the next national election is around the corner. We will punish you ANC ! Remember...you can't steal and give out jobs for loyalists and family members if you don't have the political power. And we, the voters, are the ones who gave you that power in the first place.

Now now people. Blade is a communist what more would you expect! Perhaps the City Press can launch a newer tabloid NP and call it the "Anti- Stalinist" and refuse Blade any his puppets to be featured or place articles in it. Woot!! I can see the fella "Bursting Out In Tears" in court when his challenge against the paper is denied, for taking communism to task! Called freedom of the Press to choose what they will and will not print ole chap. DEAL WITH IT or relocate to one of your cherished dysfunctional tyrannical communist countries. "Be a cold day in HELL" that the SACP is ever of any real independent relevance in South Africa. Talk about a "mickey mouse" party and yes the ANC can do without the SACP and still unfortunately remain the government of the day. Know this! Now run along and give yourself a honorary degree "in pulling weeds out the cabbage patch"! VIVA CITY PRESS VIVA!! PANZI BLADE NZIMANDE PANZI, PANZI SACP PANZI!!

      Pieter - 2012-05-24 21:12

Mr. Price. The day blacks invent something useful to play with is the day they stop obsessing about their skin colour and stop their self-loathing. You see, when you invent something (anything!) it give's your mind something useful to do. If whites are racists then I suppose blacks will always be the victims of something. By the way, you are very correct when you allude to trivialities. Everything is very trivial in Africa - life for example. That's probably why Africa cannot feed itself.

  • Cornelius - 2012-05-24 19:38

Democracy has both positives and negatives. The negatives are the abuse of it by people with sinister motives like Brett Murray, Goodman Gallery and City Press. Depicting someone's genitals in public can't be tolerated. We can manage to attack Zuma in a moral way when we are not happy with the way things are going. To some extent you can think Mugabe is right in his way of putting people in line. No one can do such an artwork in Zimbabwe as the consequence is heavier than the commercial return. Nandos South Africa tried their advert, The Last Dictator Standing but Mugabe took them head-on. Mugabe won't give you the opportunity of creating stupid constitutional debate

      Mark - 2012-05-24 19:44

Cornelius. Zimbabwe is everything we in South Africa abhor. We do not tolerate Dictators here.

      Alain - 2012-05-24 19:52

Wow... amazing how some people think? sinister motives? Is highlighting the truths that were already out there sinister? To be respected is to respect.

      Cornelius - 2012-05-24 19:54

@ Rustic, You don't want dictatorship because you want to abuse people in leadership positions. Surely we can't practise democracy by showcasing the President's penis or testicles!!

      Alain - 2012-05-24 20:01

lets just get one thing straight... Zuma is not the first president to be shown in this light!

      Cornelius - 2012-05-24 20:12

@ Alain, tell me of another president who was portrayed with his genitals hanging and the artwork placed in a public viewing gallery. I don't have a problem with artwork that exposes our leaders but to use genitals is wrong

      Phae - 2012-05-24 20:32

Cornelius, don't you understand the world has been fighting for these rights to freedom since the beginning of time. Freedom from oppressive kings. chiefs, tribes. Isn't that what the fight against apartheid was? You are now fighting for the reintroduction of oppression, make up your mind, backwards or forwards. You do not have the right to force your opinion on others, and culture is an opinion made up and followed through time. It is not a universal truth.

      Alain - 2012-05-24 20:35

Protrait of the now late President of Atletico Madrid, Painting of President Bush titled "Man of Leisure, King George", Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada...

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-24 20:36

      Agreed Comrade Cornelius,

      Cornelius - 2012-05-24 20:47

@ Phae, my point is, portraying someone's testicles is not a sign of democracy. Democracy is good but we can't behave as animals in the name of democracy. We must know what is right and wrong.

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 20:50

@Cornelius, you can look at the art by Ayanda Mabula. He painted our prez naked before brett.

      Pieter - 2012-05-24 21:16

'putting people in line'? I thought that was what Apartheid did???

  • nduduzo2 - 2012-05-24 19:40

  • Alain - 2012-05-24 19:40

"City Press has missed an opportunity to prove to this country that they are indeed committed to our Constitution and its values.".... mmmm.... well if the ANC has yet to prove its committment, then why should City Press? They (ANC) are just a bunch of emotional mates

  • Lebogang - 2012-05-24 19:41

There is one solution to this issue dialogue. The editor seem to have been blind sighted by this whole issue and didn't see the boycott coming. News 24 should facilitate a high level discussion to bring an end to this drama.

      Bambanani - 2012-05-24 20:27

fariel didnt see this coming, she was not arrogant on e tv at 19h00 interview, she knows very well that sale will go down, she must call for support from the ather society the rich and white to buy this black paper.

  • MikeGriffinPod1 - 2012-05-24 19:45

  • stanton.clarke - 2012-05-24 19:45

Why are none of the black readers here not saying anything about Ayanda Mabulu's painting and making such a big fuss about it!

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 19:57

Why would they burn the race card so soon. They have been ignoring my comments about Ayanda for the past 2 days in every thread. Not a whisper.

      Maletopom - 2012-05-24 19:57

And you are? A white reader! Why don't you say something about it! This is about human dignity, the person can be pink, orange, brown. No one should be disrespected or humiliated. What was the motive of the artist when he portrait such! Disrespectful or hatred! You may not like, or agree with his decisions, you may not have even voted for him, but the matter of fact is that he is a president of our nation and above that he is a human being and someone else's father!

      peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-05-24 20:05

Stop playing the race card dude. These is not about SKIN, but SIN!!

      HugoMabasa - 2012-05-24 20:12

Melanie Nel @Hugo, you have 95 percent poverty stricken people from your 33mil. They never bought it in the first place because they are waiting for ANC promises while feezing and starving to death is this the one you are referring to,celebrating the misery of the black men?

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-24 20:12

      huh...

      zamoe.zama - 2012-05-24 20:24

It must sink into u brain that majority rule and because people who are racist wont accept it thats why you post comments that supports minority defeats. Constructive comments are expected from sane individuals. If you leave in the past sorry. The City Press is a paper and is not supposed to be biased but it is the tool of the minority. Well no wonder why there is such an outcry ov there because people like you fail the 10 Commandments.

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 20:31

@hugo, I am referring to the comment I just commented on HERE! Difficult to understand for you, maybe, but have you seen the paintings by Ayanda Mabula? He did one with a naked zuma 2 years ago and no fuss was made. Our pint is just, why now when a white dude paints it as well, its a problem? I don't like these paintings by either artists. They are disgusting. The comment you are referring to was relevant to your post about 3 mil vs 33mil.

      Tebogo - 2012-05-24 20:31

i agree if zuma was offended by brett murray's painting , ayanda's painting should have offended him too and garnered as much attention . i think people who have been racially abused are more sensitive - according to \the times \ the high court says the goodman gallery refuses to exhibit a painting which might be offensive to muslims and jews . people are very sensitive . its an honour thing , to some people salman rushdie's the satanic verses was a punishable by death offense . both paintings to me have no relevance , i really don't care if zuma is a womaniser or philanderer just like i didn't think clinton should have been impeached , a painting of betty ford drinking vodka or ellenor roosevelt carpet munching really wouldn't have relevance they would just be distasteful . i think we really shouldn't concern ourselves with what's happening in politicians bedrooms . i think anything he does politically he can be ripped about - i liked zapiro's cartoon of zuma unzipping his pants with a scared lady justice it was relevant . i also liked brett murray's a.n.c for sale sold painting - implying the rife lobbying activity or buying of political allies .

      stanton.clarke - 2012-05-24 20:35

Have any of you actually seen Ayanda's painting, he also painted President Zuma with his penis hangnig about and did the same with the Arch. Have a look at this link and see for yourself. http://imfundo.wordpress.com/2012/05/23/ayanda-mabulu-vs-brett-murray/ Peter, I am not playing the race card and Melanie, I am not a white reader! I am just trying to understand why the ANC and some black readers called Murray's painting disrespectful and racist...is it because Murray is white? Why didnt anyone then also slam Ayanda for his painting. Thats unfair guys!

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 20:38

@Hugo, I will never celebrate anybody's misery ever! I will fight for the poor and weak people as I have always done. I was born into a poor white family and I am still poor. I don't have a job and depend on limited resources. I want the best for everybody in this country. I know how it feels to be hopeless and it makes me mad to see money sqaundered on irrelevant cr@p like a painting when it could have helped numerous families that so desperately need it.

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 20:41

Exactly Stanton. Been saying that all along.

      Maletopom - 2012-05-24 20:58

I think ANC is handling this the wrong way, yes Zuma is offended, but am sure if they would have negotiated or discuss this behind close doors with the artist and the gallery, this would have been dealt with in a reasonable manor and dignified! City press just played its role as a newspaper. All am saying is no one should be disrespected like that, unless you enter into some agreement with the artist! If it was you, would you be ok with it? Let's be realistic and not forgetting that he is the president of our nation, whether you like it or not.

  • MikeGriffinPod1 - 2012-05-24 19:46

  • theunis.botha.96 - 2012-05-24 19:46

Considering City Press in my last will and testament.Anyone that achieve to get the current ANC government so mad and outrageous, and to extend where Blade and Gwede is spitting accid from public forums, calling on it's supporters to boicot an or certain media circulations (taking into account that only one tenth might read newspapers) must surely be hitting the right buttons.
