Cape Town - Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi says ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe was "playing the race card" in his comments about Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele.

Buthelezi was speaking to News24 about Ramphele's decision to stand as the Democratic Alliance's presidential candidate in the 2014 general election.

Mantashe was reported as saying on Tuesday that Ramphele's candidacy is "what we call 'rent a black' and 'rent a leader'".

Buthelezi said he had respect for the DA and Agang SA's decision, adding that Mantashe was "playing politics".
