Johannesburg - There is no lack of political interest among South African youth, Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said on Saturday.

"The problem though is that young people are not turning up at the polling stations in numbers that reflect the size or interest of the youth demographic," he said.

"When it comes to the crunch, when it comes to voting day, too many young people don't go and vote."

Buthelezi was addressing students at a Freedom Day conference at the University of the Free State in Qwa Qwa.

He said it was possible that the younger generation did not know of the power they had.

"I want to make this point loud and clear today: you have the power. You can change this country. And you can do it now," he said.

"There is tremendous strength in the voice of the youth, but it needs to be used wisely."
