Cape Town - Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has instituted legal action against Business Day and independent political analyst Protas Madlala.

This follows the publication of a "libellous article" about the IFP that appeared in the paper on June 20 2010, the party said in a statement on Monday.

"The article contained a wrongful and defamatory statement made by Mr Madlala in which he attacked the integrity and character of Prince Buthelezi."

The IFP had initially issued a letter of demand to the paper and Madlala appealing to them to withdraw the statement and issue an apology in place and manner as prominent as the defamatory article had initially appeared.

In addition, the IFP's lawyers had asked that Business Day remove the article from its website and pay damages.

The IFP had hoped at the time that the matter could be resolved amicably between the three parties.

"However, despite the demand the defendants have neither paid damages to Prince Buthelezi, nor have they retracted the defamatory statements or apologised.

"They have also not removed the offending article from their website where the public is still able to access the article."

Madlala's "slanderous comments" had caused Buthelezi unnecessary harm.

This had left the IFP leader with no other option but to defend the IFP's and his own reputation through legal action, the party said.

Who is Prince Buthelezi? Last time I checked you can only be called a Prince if you are a brother to the king- in other words your surname is Zulu and the ruling king is your brother or half brother and not a cousin? Are all cousins of the Royal family referred to as Prince? Am also a Prince considering that the sons and daughters to the king of the amaZulu are my cousins? Hehe, Prince Zakhele...Sounds nice, makes me think I am a royal family member. Well I am not. I am just a son of a daughter there and my father was jus another ordinary chief.. heh, heh, heh....Prince!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey MANGO was feeling left out with JZ and JUJU stealing the headlines. So he decides to sue someone. Where are the days when we use to settle scores with duels.

Actually, he was given the title of prince on the day of his birth. "Prince of Kwaphindangene". His great grand father was King Cetshwayo, he is therefore within his rights to use the title.

@safferoverseas- my mother is also the sister of the current king of amaZulu but I can never be referred to as Prince. It is only my cousins (direct children of the king and my uncles) that are called prince and princes. You don't take title of prince from the royal family with your mother to another unknown chief in the village. In real iSizulu and the Zulu culture you are only a prince if you are a Zulu by surname born directly from the Royal family house. Buthelezi has many cousins (obhuti nosisi) who are never called prince. I am sure Verwoerd had a lot to do with this when he and Shenge kept tempering with the salary of the amaZulu king. Simply: Verwoerd government imposed this Prince thing to a Buthelezi guy otherwise the kind salary would be withheld. Read the history baba: This guy is bad news. The Zulu monarchy has declared that they will never make the same mistake when his time comes. Did you know that he want forced himself into the WILL of the current amaZulu King's father his majesty King Cyprian? Did you know that he further down the packing order of the many chiefs who worked and served the Zulu monarchy with distinction? Lastly: Did you know that he pushed all the real Prince and Princes out of the royal family and installed himself as number 2? Till today the Zulu monarchy brothers and sisters are distant because of him and Verwoerd. Truth be told!

Crimin Juria: a uniguely South African law used to silence dissenters to the apartheid government which unlike it international name sake, does nopt place a durben of proof on the plantiff other than for them to claim that their feelings have been hurt and which does not rely in the truth or accuracy of the statement made. (in terms of our local variation of this law if you call someone a clown and they take exception they can sue you and even if you produce the clown institutes certificate of recognision of the person as a life long member of the brotherhood of clowns you can still be found guilty of an offense) ONLY IN SOUTH AFRICA can you be found guilty of an offense for telling the truth.
