By-elections to be held in 8 provinces

Johannesburg - By-elections will take place in eight provinces next week, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Thursday.

"A total of 22 wards will be contested by 63 candidates, representing 11 political parties and six independent candidates," spokesperson Kate Bapela said in a statement.

Twelve of the 22 elections were being held because the councillor died. In the other 10 the councillor resigned.

The by-elections would take place on 27 November.

Eastern Cape

Four would be held in the Eastern Cape because after the councillors died.

Ward 5 in the Kouga municipality (Humansdorp) would be contested by the ANC and the DA. The ward was previously represented by the DA.

Ward 9 in the Kouga municipality would also be contested by the ANC and the DA. The ward was previously held by the ANC.

Ward 2 in the Mnquma municipality (Butterworth) would be contested by the ANC, the DA, the PAC and the United Democratic Movement (UDM). The ward was previously held by the ANC.

Ward 13 in the Nkonkobe municipality (Alice) was previously held by the ANC. It would be contested by the ANC and the PAC.

Free State

In the Free State, Ward 8 in the Nala municipality (Bothaville) was uncontested, with the ANC's Pini Ruth Ramaele the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the party and became vacant when the councillor died.

Gauteng

Two by-elections would take place in Gauteng. Ward 96 in the Ekurhuleni municipality was being contested by an independent candidate, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), the ANC, the IFP, the National Freedom Party (NFP), and the PAC. The ward was previously represented by the ANC but became vacant when the councillor resigned.

Ward 12 in the Emfuleni municipality (Vereeniging) would be contested by the ANC and the PAC. This was after the previous ANC councillor died.

KwaZulu-Natal

Five by-elections would be held in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ward 70 in the eThekwini municipality (Durban), which used to be represented by the Minority Front, became vacant when the councillor resigned. The ward would now be contested by the ACDP, the ANC, Cope, the DA, the IFP and the Minority Front.

Ward eight in Ladysmith would be contested by the ANC, the IFP, the National Democratic Convention, and the NFP. The ward was previously represented by the ANC but became vacant when the councillor died.

Ward 2 in the Okhahlamba municipality (Bergville) would be contested by the ANC, the IFP, and the NFP. The previous NFP councillor resigned.

Ward 3 in the Endumeni municipality (Dundee) would be contested by an independent candidate, the ANC, the IFP, and the NFP. This was after the previous ANC councillor died.

Ward 14 in the Mfolozi municipality (KwaMbonambi) would be contested by the ANC, the IFP, and the NFP. The ward was previously represented by the ANC but the councillor resigned.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, Ward 8 in the Modimolle municipality would be contested by the DA and the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus). The ward was represented by the DA and became vacant when the councillor died.

Mpumalanga

Five by-elections would take place in Mpumalanga.

Ward 16 in the Mkhondo municipality (Piet Retief) would be contested by the ANC and the NFP. This was after the ANC councillor resigned.

Ward 22 in the Emalahleni municipality would be contested by the ANC and the DA. This was after the DA councillor resigned.

Ward 6 in the Thaba Chweu municipality (Sabie) would be contested by two independent candidates and the ANC. The ward was previously held by the ANC but the councillor resigned.

Ward 21 in the Mbombela municipality (Nelspruit) would be contested by an independent candidate, the ANC, and the PAC. The ward became vacant when the ANC councillor resigned.

Ward 34 in the Mbombela municipality would be contested by an independent candidate, the ANC, and the PAC. This was after the ANC councillor resigned.

North West

Two by-elections would be held in the North West.

Ward 1 in the Kgetlengrivier municipality (Koster) was uncontested, with Canney Thabo Jacobs of the ANC the only candidate. The previous ANC candidate resigned.

Ward 6 in the Ditsobotla municipality (Lichtenburg) would be contested by the ANC, the DA, and the FF Plus. The ward was represented by the DA but the councillor died.

Northern Cape

Two by-elections would be held in the Northern Cape.

Ward 9 in the Sol Plaatje municipality (Kimberley) would be contested by the ANC and the PAC. This was after the previous ANC councillor died.

Ward 4 in the Gamagara municipality (Kathu) would be contested by the ANC and the DA. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor died.
