Cape Town - More than 4 000 people ranging from cabinet ministers to municipal workers paid tribute to Walter Sisulu at a memorial service in Cape Town on Wednesday.
The service was the second official memorial for the African National Congress stalwart who died last week at the age of 90.
Speaking under a giant banner acclaiming Sisulu as a "hero among heroes", Deputy President Jacob Zuma said Sisulu had been one of South Africa's unifying figures.
He had transcended political and other boundaries and became a leader that all South Africans looked up to regardless of political or other divides.
"He has played his part and must now be allowed to rest.
"The challenge remains with those left behind, to begin the difficult task of walking in his footsteps."
President Thabo Mbeki was also on the stage with the dignitaries, while former president FW de Klerk and his wife Elita were given seats of honour in the front row of the hall.
