Cabinet cheers SA athletes

2008-08-20 18:05

Cape Town - Cabinet on Wednesday congratulated Khotso Mokoena for winning a men's long jump silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

"His achievement came at a time when South Africans had given up hope of getting a medal at these Olympics," government spokesperson Themba Maseko said after Cabinet's fortnightly meeting.

Swimmer Natalie du Toit was also congratulated for being the first disabled athlete to compete with able-bodied athletes at the Olympics.

"Although she did not win a medal, her courage and participation at these Olympics will go down in history as one of the highlights of the Beijing Olympics, and will go a long way towards motivating youth in South Africa and the world never to give up their dreams," Maseko said.

Cabinet called on South Africans to continue to support SA athletes to the end.

Although they had not yet met the expectations of many South Africans with regard to winning medals, it was worth noting that many of them improved their personal performances.

An assessment would be conducted at the end of these Olympics to determine which steps should be taken to support and develop SA athletes for future games, he said.

Gail says... Her mother is probably not at home and when she is too exhausted to set the rules. My housekeeper (who lives with her children in a township) rules her kids with a rod of iron. EVERYONE has to be inside at 6p.m. (including her husband when he was still alive). None of us who live in the burbs realise what these people have to live with. We weep and wail when it's done to one of ours and build walls and install security systems. Over the 24 yrs she has worked for me I have educated and advised her and she has never once worked over holidays when there is noone to care for her children. She goes home at 3.30 in the afternoon so that she can ensure that SHE is safe and get her children in. One can start here to assist and educate in your own home by realising that these are mothers carrying enormous loads and assisting them with practical things. I dealt with the fallout from a statutory rape of an impregnated girl and provided alternatives to abortion as well as counselling. People asked why I had got involved - people in places like childline! Volunteer and become an advocate. I teach it to my older students and taught my sons one of whom wnt into disadvantaged schools as a law student to teach kids at schools what their rights were re sexual harrassment.
