Chabane, deputy spent R550 000 on car hire

2011-12-06 19:50

Cape Town - Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane and his deputy spent almost R550 000 on car hire between March 2010 and July 2011.

In a parliamentary reply to the Democratic Alliance, Chabane revealed that he spent R159 000 during this period, equating to about R3 600 in car hire a day over 44 days.

Deputy Minister Dina Pule spent R387 000, amounting to about R2 500 a day over 156 days.

DA public service and administration spokesperson Geordin Hill-Lewis said such "reckless spending" was being condoned because of provisions in the ministerial handbook.

"This handbook allows ministers to live a life of luxury at the expense of ordinary South Africans."

He said Public Service and Administration Minister Roy Padayachie should ensure long awaited amendments to the handbook were presented and implemented immediately to curb excess spending.

      GARBADGEDAY - 2011-12-06 20:01

Eish! Iz good to be coorupt hey! I wonder how many stories like this will have to be published before ANC supporters finally wake up. Too many it seems...

      Sean - 2011-12-06 20:51

@GARBADGEDAY - If the ANC supporters had to wake up ( educated ) there would be no ANC anymore !

      Sedick - 2011-12-07 00:35

You are actually being kind calling them thugs,,,,they are worse than common criminals...they are scum of the earth......

Would this information be available if the secrecy act was in place?

      Adam - 2011-12-06 20:11

Absolutely not, well on the internet yes but not paper print

      Andre - 2011-12-06 20:44

No it wouldn't thats why the comrades want the act.

      Juan - 2011-12-07 06:14

You will have to read about it on Wikileaks

  • braamc - 2011-12-06 20:08

And the people die of hunger

      Juan - 2011-12-07 06:18

If all our politicians could focus on serving the people instead of themselves, imagine what a fantastic place South Africa could be.

  • Adam - 2011-12-06 20:10

A friend of mine in Europe is a Senator. He also holds a position at a University as Dr. Professor of Political History. His mode of transport to Parliament is by bicycle. Funny to see him put those clips around his trousers so his pants don’t get caught in the cog. On rainy days, he uses the bus and train. See, he is self actualized. He serves the public as an elected servant. He is comfortable in his own skin, bling and cars don’t make you a better politician. The hope of this mindset ever coursing the veins of a SA politician is infinitely impossible.

      Jabu - 2011-12-08 18:35

Well said, In Europe, this is Mzansi, wake up bru!!!

  • aneke.minnie1 - 2011-12-06 20:16

national lise the goverment , they waste enough money. you could give each citizen R1,000,000.00 AND THE COUNTRY WOULD NOT EVEN FEEL IT. imagane the bilions they waste . sombody should explain this to te masses

      johnkk - 2011-12-06 22:04

The question is how do we get that information to the masses. If we could we might get the country to turn around. However, similiar promises are made to the voters by 'you know who' at each election !!!

  • Oceanh - 2011-12-06 20:23

DISGRACEFUL, who the hell does he think he is?? The is no acountability in the ANC government.

  • Thapelo Mokomele - 2011-12-06 20:23

Firstly, what thoughts went through their minds when they went out to rent out cars... Look for the MOST EXPENSIVE ones they can find and rent them, of course they had options they just choose the EXPENSIVE ones. And it looks like the problem is the handbook, then make changes. Talking wont do any good if the is no change.

      Sharon - 2011-12-06 21:50

      what minds

  • Refilwe IronMan Rakoma - 2011-12-06 20:23

Wow news 24, President Zuma gives a great speech to the world and all you can come up with is an article to diffuse a black man doing good. 'Oh no we can commend that an ANC president of this corrupt government for bringing the world together on the most important issue of our generation, people might think they are not so bad'! Disgraceful!

      CALAMITYSA - 2011-12-06 20:41

Do you condone it Refilwe. Don't - It is wrong and somebody must tell them. If you become anything in government - please fight AGAINST the wrongs. Please!!!

      Adam - 2011-12-06 20:54

@Rifilwe: Sorry, are you trying to say that Zuma read his prepared script well without stalling on any wording that was written for him? I have yet to hear one pearl of his own wisdom.

      Mantsho - 2011-12-06 20:55

Go back to your country Lesotho!

      Arthur - 2011-12-06 21:22

Zuma is discredited. No-one believes what comes out his mouth

      Paul - 2011-12-06 21:24

Ethnic groups, race, culture and religion the basis of every western stereotypes argument. Shallow minds or underdeveloped brain capacity caused by a lack of breeding and a culture which lacks any historical value other than to rape and plunder.

      elsie.debeer - 2011-12-06 22:40

My dear, Time to wake up and face the real world. We are having in our Little country of SA = after the massive change in 1994 for democracy and the take over of ANC the best policeman ever in jail - he even was part of the international INTERPOL group = ministers and their deputies spending R6 100 a day on car rentals = more than many a single person earns a MONTH as salary - not even looking at pensioners and elderly! Our dear current president is also not quite as "clean"of reputation! He can "read" the speech but I only wonder if he realy knows what is happening in our country as they are so much more abroad when trouble is at home! Should I still be paying my taxes if its not going for the service delivery and all other things it is suppose to go for. Please have a look again at all footage on the cop converence before putting comments, not as good as we want to for our country!

  • SeeVeeDeeEl - 2011-12-06 20:26

Banana republic being run by the banana eaters.

      Kwezi Tyrone Beshe - 2011-12-06 20:43

Write your real name on here & then make comments like this. Be a man!

      Sean - 2011-12-06 20:55

Well Kwezi , that is the truth !! They are nothing , but a bunch of self enriching criminals !

      SeeVeeDeeEl - 2011-12-06 21:03

Kwezi Tyrone Beshe, in a banana republic you don't do things like using your own name, because the banana eaters are totally unpredictable.

      Kwezi Tyrone Beshe - 2011-12-06 21:05

Well Sean a "criminal" & a "banana eater" are two very different things. One has an extremely racist connotation.

      SeeVeeDeeEl - 2011-12-06 21:10

Kwezi Tyrone Beshe, a banana eater has a definite banana republic connotation, and we're so-by-so there (at the banana republic).

  • Larry - 2011-12-06 20:30

What a Rip-of, the problem is, they dont see anything wrong with this behaviour.f

  • CALAMITYSA - 2011-12-06 20:38

The HANDBOOK. Page 1 - Instruction 1 - SIT DOWN (With thanks to "THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES - +- 1959??) Knowingly a "NEW" handbook is being prepared. BUT the amendments will take LOOOOONG because the spending, corruption, timing, etc etc is all part of the ANC/AFRICAN CULTURE!!

  • jmccaffs - 2011-12-06 20:40

    no morals, no control,

  • Burtfred - 2011-12-06 20:46

The car hire company that charged this absurd amount, knowing full well that they were renting to an ANC tosser with taxpayers money - do they have no shame? Which company was it? I won't use them again.

      Liz - 2011-12-06 21:19

Very well said Mantsho! ...but why can't people in power curb their greed and need to flaunt their privileged existence? Sadly wake up day may still be a long way off and actually we do not seem to have many viable alternatives at this point.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2011-12-06 21:01

This,in the same country where children died of hunger looking for food. This, by people supposed to bring about "a better life for all". S.A. cannot grow like this. We simply must get rid of these useless, parasitic power besotted egotistical politicians.

  • elsie.debeer - 2011-12-06 22:10

This is the limit - how can R 3600 be spent on car rental when the poor cashier in the retail store is earning that as a monthly salary. She is "taking" from the customer a tip and his change just to buy the bread for kids and hungry elderly at home as she is the only one being employed. Yet the people she voted for to better her life is now the ones stealing from all! She lost her work cause she was in need to feed! Enjoy the ride mr in your rented car on my behalf and all the others who actually work for a living and payng SARS. What a nice country to be in - the RAinbow SA - I never got the passport to emmigrate to this one!

  • robert.verdonk - 2011-12-06 22:30

Well done for News 24 to expose this kind of behavior.

  • ailsa.j.loudon - 2011-12-07 00:58

Yet one more instance of two government officials who completely ignore the plight of the millions of jobless white, coloured and black men and women in South Africa today. Please get rid of the selfish and egotistical people in our government!!

  • Kevin - 2011-12-07 07:28

Soon after the white man is gone, they will be back wearing loin cloths and riding oxen...not to work, because there won't be any once the white man has left...!

  • William - 2011-12-07 07:52

This handbook will never be adjusted!! It allows these fat cats to live a life of luxury while ordinary S Africans starve!! Nice!!! The gravy train is getting keeps on running!! They must be looking forward to there Xmas bonus!!

  • tacod - 2011-12-07 08:55

Does the government not poses pool cars that can be used by these idiots. They spend money as if there is no end to the income. And the service delivery???? It all leave questions that the South African public need answers to as they are the shareholders in the government.

  • Sharon - 2011-12-07 09:00

Make them pay it all back..............and they must be given a Volkswagan to drive.

  • Maai - 2011-12-07 09:01

Eish these unproductive things just love to spend the white mans tax money.

  • Jason - 2011-12-07 09:58

Well done Collins and Dina - I am certain you enjoyed driving those Beemers and Mercs, hopefully you will now lose your jobs, and will have to make use of the public death traps, sorry taxis. Your a f*cken waste of skin!!

  • Andre - 2011-12-07 10:48

How arrogant and ignorant can a minister and her cronies be? How do they sleep at night? The PP should investigate if all humans do have a concious or are some born without it? The latter seems very obvious looking at this corrupt government that just keep on stealing, misspending and then the arrogance to justify it.

  • robert.verdonk - 2011-12-30 23:01

We are talking about 16 months, i.e. R34.375 a months between 2 Ministers. Each Minister R 17.188 or English Pound 1322/month! Cheaper than actualy buying the car and maintaning it. I know how much the DA is currently costing the Western Cape in legal cost and lost economic opportunaties.! Far more than those "Car Hires". So lets all get "Real" for 2012. Stop looking at how you can "Expose, bring down, humiliate etc." your political rival that brings no real progress to SA. Instead put all your energy in "Serving SA and doing your job without brushing up your own ego". We actually might get somewhere.
