Clerk to appear for textbook dumping

2012-07-10 21:06

Johannesburg A clerk in the Limpopo education department will appear in the Giyani Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, in connection with the dumping of school textbooks, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the 44-year old man was initially expected to appear in court on Tuesday, but would now appear on Wednesday.

He faced a charge of malicious damage to property.

Textbooks for mathematics Grade 8 and numeracy in Sepedi, Grade 3, were found dumped in Giyani last week.

Mulaudzi said the arrest would not affect charges laid by the Democratic Alliance against the department and a contractor.

The DA laid a charge against the department for vandalism and destruction of books in Seshego. Another charge was brought against a service provider who allegedly dumped the textbooks in Giyani.

Schools in the province were without books for the first seven months of the school year.

Fall guy! Processes and procedures, there are none. This clerk is either going to claim 'instructions from above' or being left alone to decide what to do with a mountain of books that nobody was able to deliver or take delivery of. Either way, this clerk is at the very end of a very messed up process with no controls or oversight. This clerk loses his job, gets a fine and/or goes to jail. Everyone else culpable, go on their merry way.

Leonard, my sentiments exactly. Ek dink die poppe gaan dans. I don't think this guys made this decision himself. Shame on this department!

      Christelle - 2012-07-10 22:18

Just something else - and the government wants the private sector to invest their money in public schools, not private ones. How in God's name can they ask this? For the money to be dumped again??

      Christelle - 2012-07-10 22:23

Apologies - Cosatu (actually no difference - at the end of the day they both have each other by the short and curlies)

      Lacrimose - 2012-07-10 22:27

@Leonard - die poppe dans elke dag. Die speelgoed toyi toyi met die toekoms van die mense en die land.

That is exactly what happens when people hold posts in Government that is not qualified to hold the said position! They blame the bunny!! He had to have had followed orders as no \CLERK\ has the power to act on such orders on his/her own accountability! Its the Minister of Educations fault and hers alone as she is the one that is supposed to oversee the entire process and must have approved such order to destroy those books to try and conceal the muck-up her department has made, but someone found out before they had time to cover it up! Now someone has to be found who can take the wrap, what better person than a clerk to take the blame! Pretty sure they will pay him a hefty lump sum for the beating he has to take, the bribe will however be paid out on next years budget as the Edu dept has already spend this years budget!! This whole government is a joke, re-shuffling of parliment 3 times in one year!!! Its like taking a cop off the road and say now your a doctor, your head of finance but now you'll be a cop, your from the minerals dept, let's make you minister of defense???WTF?????????

He will quietly take the fall, collect his money, go off to jail for a week or so (remember jail for ex-govmnt officials here is like Sun City ) then quietly be sent home and given another job in government somewhere else on much more money. So, spill the beans? I dont think so.

Just another ANC cover up - at least they reward their fall guys well!
