Cope youth faction: Shilowa an ANC spy

2011-01-19 14:27

Johannesburg - Cope co-founder Mbhazima Shilowa is an ANC "mole" planted to destroy the break-away party, the Cope Youth Movement claimed on Wednesday.

"The chief mole is Shilowa, tasked to destruct (sic)... the organisation," CYM secretary Abel Rangata said.

The faction of the youth movement aligned to apparent party leader Mosiuoa Lekota - who claim they are legitimately elected - was addressing reporters in the foyer of the Metropolitan Building, Cope's new Johannesburg headquarters.

"The tensions and hassles... were not just motivated by mere ambitions of individuals... They are fuelled by the ANC," Rangata charged.

He could not provide evidence of the allegation.

"We don't have information that we can give you... These are very secretive plans. It's not paranoia, it's a fact... You wait and see."

'ANC war-room plan'

The main aim of the ANC's alleged plan to "destabilise" Cope was to deliver it back to the governing party.

"It's a plan hatched in the war-room of the ANC."

Shilowa on Wednesday declined to be drawn on the allegations.

"I do not want to comment on these allegations, I am busy with party work and preparation for local government elections," he said in a brief telephonic interview.

The ANC-breakaway party has been plagued by a power struggle between co-founders Lekota and Shilowa. It is presently unclear who the legitimate president of the party is, because both men claim the title.

According to the Lekota faction, Cope's chaotic elective conference in December was abandoned due to violence and disruptions. The Shilowa camp however claimed the conference held a legitimate election and a new leadership was appointed.

The Cope youth members who hosted the media briefing and other Lekota-aligned members were locked out of the Cope offices on Wednesday morning by a group of security guards apparently appointed by the Shilowa faction.

The country needs Cope that can cope. They remind me of the power struggle between Zuma and Mbeki not so long ago.

      Thangy - 2011-01-19 15:27

Agreed, besides who cares anyway, they have failed!!

      Mlu - 2011-01-19 15:29

Zuma was not fighting Mbeki. Mbeki and his crew at Cope were fighting my President.Thought I should correct your observation.

  • SiphovdMerwe - 2011-01-19 14:52

  • The-man-who - 2011-01-19 15:00

Rangata please stop smoking weed dude, a party formed on lies and anger will not leave to see nor smell the fruit of success as the foundation is was found on is baseless.

  • Phinda - 2011-01-19 15:01

I support that notion. How can Shilowa fight so much with the man who stood up against the ANC whilest he was inside the ANC. He followed Lekota to distabalise COPE. PS I am not a COPE support but mere observance!

      lenand40 - 2011-01-20 14:29

So, since Mugabe fought against the British colonist, he cannot do anything that betrays what he originally stood for because he was power hungry?

i am glad Cope is not was a disaster from the word go...firstly it is composed of people whose sense of loyalty is highly questionable. we will advise the ANC not to take back any of the people coming from that self-destructive movement!

      Boychild - 2011-01-20 15:12

Gilbert from CPUT, I am so glad that the ANC is now using members from higher learning institutions to advise them..... now please advise them to reject ll those ANC members who do not live in the spirit of Unbuntu.

  • WiseOwl2 - 2011-01-19 15:16

  • XAD - 2011-01-19 15:52

It will not be surprising in the least if this allegation is confirmed.

      lenand40 - 2011-01-20 14:30

or perhaps Lekota is the spy for the ANC and thought that if he pushed that claim towards Shilowa, no one will suspect him of doing his best to distabilise cope with court cases, and endless postponement of elections. We deserve the leaders we end up with

  • summerskye6 - 2011-01-19 16:24

Shilowa is an ANC agent 200%. He must be exposed.

      bmashilo - 2011-01-19 18:30

      lenand40 - 2011-01-20 14:31

@bmashilo PAC destroyed itself, again through leadership squabbles

  • maseratifitt - 2011-01-19 18:27

Is ANC still paying money into Shilowa's bank account?

  • bmashilo - 2011-01-19 18:37

How can minister drive a vehicle more than a million rands but while kids still studing under the trees.

  • bmashilo - 2011-01-19 18:39

President of this country must be like Thomas Sankara, the fisrst president of Bakina Faso, he cut the salaries of his ministers to that of the teachers. He and his ministers were driving cheaprst vehicles in that country.

  • GhengisKhan - 2011-01-19 21:21

African politics and logic at its best

  • lenand40 - 2011-01-20 14:27

How was Lekota legitimately elected? he postponed several elective congresses and has never been elected by general membership. Regardless of how one feels about both Shilowa and Lekota, it is rather unworthy of anyone to claim that Lekota was legitimately elected. Elected by whom? Also, one would get the distinct impression that Shilowa had far more to lose at leaving the ANC than Lekota whose SANDF was one of the worst run government institutions (Gauteng was respected)

      The Patriot - 2011-01-20 17:25

well firstly the courts say he was the legitimate leader of Cope. Shilowa is nothing but a power monger. Screwed this up big time.

  • Mr. Levi's - 2011-01-20 17:28

    Come back home.

      patricksili6 - 2011-01-22 01:07
