Cosas calls for safe schools

Durban - Student body Cosas has called for security to be beefed up in schools to deter criminals who see them as soft targets.

"The department of education is failing us. Ministers continue saying that schools are safe but learners die left, right and centre," Congress of South African Students’ Andile Mkhize said in a statement on Wednesday.

He found it unfair that ministers were protected by heavily-armed and well-trained security guards while pupils and teachers were vulnerable to attacks.

"We need... well-trained security guards to be stationed at each school. We don’t want old security guards who use sticks to protect us."
