Cosatu outraged by dept outsourcing

2011-09-27 19:07
Johannesburg - Cosatu has expressed disgust following reports that the public works department spent money for outsourcing media duties, instead of using its own communications team.

"It is ridiculous that a department which describes itself as the handyman of the state and a crucial player in job creation... resorts to outsourcing even the most basic of its functions," spokesperson Phindile Kunene said on Tuesday.

"Through outsourcing, government departments waste millions of rands which could be better spent creating jobs and providing housing and better healthcare services for the poor."

The Star reported on Tuesday that the ministry had forked out R68 000 for media lobbying, R38 000 for a press conference venue, R12 000 for a press release, R10 000 for media invites and R25 000 for crisis management to external media companies in four months.

The ministry's director general Mandla Mabuza could not be reached for comment.
