Cosatu president did not endorse Zuma

2012-05-04 20:01
Bloemfontein - Union federation Cosatu on Friday denied that its president, Sidumo Dlamini, backed President Jacob Zuma for a second term as ANC leader during a Worker's Day rally in Mangaung.

Spokesperson Patrick Craven said Dlamini had been misquoted and false impressions had been created in reports by the SABC and in newspapers such as the Times and Sowetan on 2 May.

Craven said Dlamini did not make any endorsement, but spoke in line with the federation's policies, adopted by its central executive committee in November 2011 and reaffirmed in February and April this year.

This included that the Congress of SA Trade Unions would defend the ANC's leadership collective elected at its Polokwane conference in 2007 against a "tendency" attempting to destabilise it.

It also included a refusal to engage in any succession debate which would distract Cosatu from trying to change the country.

Craven said the federation had decided not to discuss the leadership of the ANC and SA Communist Party in its constitutional structures.

However, he said if Cosatu's central executive committee, or its upcoming national congress decided that circumstances demand Cosatu again debate the ANC leadership, it would do so. This decision would then be discussed with the SACP and ANC.
