Cosatu to join miniskirt march

2012-02-15 16:49

Johannesburg - Union federation Cosatu will join the ANC Women's League's march against attacks on women wearing miniskirts, spokesperson Patrick Craven said on Wednesday.

"The recent attacks... at taxi ranks have cast the spotlight on a deep-seated problem of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and violence which women face daily, at home, at work and just walking in the streets," Craven said in a statement.

The ANCWL has said it would march against gender-based violence on Friday. The Congress of SA Trade Unions said it would join the protest in solidarity.

"As the Gauteng ANCWL so rightly says: 'The struggle for women's emancipation is not over until all forms of discrimination, violence and abuse against women come to an end'," Craven said.

On Wednesday, police said no arrests had been made for the assault on two women at the Noord Street taxi rank in central Johannesburg in December.

"We haven't arrested anyone," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The women have been identified only as Zama and Nomthandazo because of the nature of their harassment.

Nomthandazo wore a black miniskirt and Zama a black top with white bra straps showing. A group of men taunted them about their clothes while groping them, pulling at their clothing and taking photos with their cellphones.

Almost a week later, the two opened a case of sexual assault, indecent assault and crimen injuria at the Johannesburg central police station. Dlamini said the police had not given up on the case, and were busy following leads.

Closed-circuit television footage of the assault formed part of the investigation, but the faces of the perpetrators were not clearly visible.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele called the act "barbaric", while Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane condemned the men's behaviour as "animal-like".

A laudable initiative but a little naive at the same time. Try this kind of dress code in any Arab country. Changing the world takes more than a march.

      Willie - 2012-02-15 17:12

this is not any Arab state

So why not join Slutwalk as well? Same purpose. Slutealk happened in Jozi last year and we walked in miniskirts etc to make the point that women can wear what they want without being at risk of being raped. Actress Sandi Schultz has been driving this as well. It is a global movement. Same goal, purpose and intention Let us pull together, pool resources and goals and make it matter on a global level!! We do not need to reinvent the wheel. This is SUCH good news from COSATU! Well done! Let us stand together. And make a stand.

The burqa issue resonates with this symptom of societal illness..

  • weldon.broughton - 2012-02-16 06:00

It would not be a mini skirt if worn by any ANC supporter. You could never fit a bum the size of two 50kg cement bags into a mini skirt

      Moss - 2012-02-16 07:19

      Haha, out of words

  • brionyl.french - 2012-02-16 06:07

And this march is expected to stop these gangsters from doing what they want? How about we actually take back our right and end these TAXIS power... they are bullies!!!
