Creecy 'paid consultant to write speech'

2011-04-20 12:33

Johannesburg - Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy paid an external consultant R18 081 to write her 2008/9 financial year budget speech when she was sport MEC, the Democratic Alliance said on Wednesday.

"It is outrageous that so much was spent on a speech that should have been written by the department's own officials," DA Gauteng sport, art, culture and recreation spokesperson Solly Nkhi said.

"How is it possible that senior officials in the department and the MEC were incapable of producing a speech without this massive added cost to the taxpayer?" he asked.

This suggested that Creecy did not know what was going on within her department's finances.

The information about the speech was revealed in a reply to questions posed in the Gauteng legislature.

"The DA hopes that MEC Creecy is not similarly uncertain of the programme of action for her current portfolio... and that the finances of the department are being used to provide education to all and not to buy speeches or pay expensive consultants for other functions that should be performed by the department," Nkhi said.

The ANC in the province could not be immediately reached for comment.

What the hell did you expect?!? How do you want somebody to have control over something they know nothing about.. let alone write a speech. Pathetic!

      shortcut - 2011-04-20 13:02

it would be so funny if the speech was sabotaged... like planting random swearwords, like in Anchorman.

      BigD - 2011-04-20 13:15

Dey does not know dat thing

  • saabnut - 2011-04-20 12:44

What a waste- Siceka could have bought half a case of Johnny Walker Gold for that money. Promote her to minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs- she will definitely keep the flag flying!

  • M.H - 2011-04-20 12:46

"...Last week ANC MP Ben Turok referred the request to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's office following a report in the Sunday Times that Shiceka allegedly spent R355 000 on a visit to a girlfriend serving time in a Swiss jail for drugs, R640 000 over one year to stay in a luxury hotel in Cape Town, and more than R160 000 to fly family around the country over eight months.".... Surley R18 081.00 is a drop in the ocean when compared with other tax payers money spent?

      Martin du Plessis - 2011-04-25 00:04

yet it is a WASTED drop. The amount is relative, but it's the fact that it was WASTED that's the main concern. And to do it so STUPIDLY is just a plain insult to people with higher than room-temp IQs

  • Raka13 - 2011-04-20 13:15

I think we as the tax PAYERS, should start stand together and DEMAND lower tax rates and bigger rebates!!!! We work to keep stupid and co in the 5* hotels and first class plain seats!!!

  • Badger - 2011-04-20 13:32

She should be ordered to pay the maoney back since it was tax payers money. This is what would happened in big companies where employees are misusing company funds. Maybe the consultant was a family member???

  • damaria.senne - 2011-04-20 13:56

Oh for God's sake! Politicians and company CEOs have been hiring writers to write their speeches for ages! Ask any professional writer and they'll tell you that speechwriting is a backbone of their business. As long as they sign non-disclosure agreements and keep their mouths shut. And R18 000 to research and write such an important document is fairly reasonable. As to why her officials were not in a position to write the speech is another story, but it happens. It just so happens that Creecy got caught and an R18 000 expenditure is being sensationalised, when actually, we have millions of rands mis-spent/lost, through corruption, to worry about.

      KnysnaSha - 2011-04-20 14:12

No amount big or small that is misspent should be accounted for and action taken

What a joke? Surely this shows that she is incompetant. Imagine I as an engineer go to my bosses with an account for R18000, telling them that I now need someone else to write my reports? I'd be fired, thus so should she.
