DA: Metro cops must stay

2012-07-03 16:32

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance has vowed to fight any attempts by the African National Congress to do away with metro police by absorbing them into the SA Police Service.

"The DA will fight any attempts by government to give effect to the ANC’s renewed call for a so-called 'single police service'," DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard said in a statement on Tuesday.

At its policy conference in Gauteng last week, the ruling party had confirmed its support for the absorption of municipal police services into the SAPS.

"Should this proposal be included in the draft white paper on safety and security, expected to be tabled in Parliament later this year, we will oppose it," she said.

The argument for the absorption of the metro police into SAPS included their lack of accountability, as well as the need for better crime-fighting responses.

However, functional metro police services, such as in Cape Town, "show that they are perfectly capable of being effective and accountable".

Metro police, in conjunction with business and other stakeholders, had brought down crime in Cape Town's CBD by 90%.

"Indeed, absorbing metro police services into the SAPS bureaucracy will only mire them in the same organisational inefficiency and chaos from which the SAPS suffers," Kohler Barnard said.

"This will destroy the crime fighting ability of the metro police."

Yep... NWO is on the way. Wonder when compulsory chipping for pets is going to hit us.

  • goyougoodthing - 2012-07-03 17:09

Will make no difference in Durban, SAPS and Metro are equally useless.

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-03 17:51

Now, there is an astute comment and worthy of a free drink!

Why does ANC want Metro Cops to be absorbed into SAPS?

      Sharon - 2012-07-03 17:59

      total controll

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-03 18:14

Hello Zimbabwe - thanks for the advice. We will put everything under one Party control. SA is doomed.

      alansmartSnr - 2012-07-03 20:02

..@ motho.batho.98 .."Why does ANC want Metro Cops to be absorbed into SAPS?" Simple..to make them as ineffective as the other provinces and to be able to keep control and monopoly of all the corruption that gets swept under the carpet.

      JanHNortje - 2012-07-04 09:14

Because they have the SAPS in the pocket. And only want to pay one bribe.

  • ngoako.mathekga - 2012-07-03 17:21

Metros should be assessed individually and those that don't meet the standard must lose their status. moving them so SAPS might not solve the problem. was impact assessment done on this?

      Boy - 2012-07-03 17:33

@ngoako.mathekga- that sounds like a very good suggestion, but however, the current anc polititian thinks that an impact study is when you hit a coconut with a rock and see if it broke afterwards...

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-07-03 17:42

If you compair the CT metro cops to the SAPS cops they will have to make all the CT cops generals!

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-03 17:58

ngoako - forget all the PC lingo. Try living in the real world where the language is very easy to understand. If you do your job properly we will continue to employ you - if you do not however, then we will be forced to fire you. Which part of this basic life skill assesment do you not understand?

      Sharon - 2012-07-03 18:02

i doubt it ngoako, someone in parliment had a brain fart and this came out

      scouter.fourone - 2012-07-03 18:25

@nettie - now don't go putting ideas into their heads. A workable society is just beginning to emerge in the WC based on a sound work ethic ..... in most forces you have to serve a lifetime in order to become a General/Commissioner. I think experience has something to do with appointments in most civilised Police forces ....

  • Billy - 2012-07-03 17:31

one way to acquire a whole lot of top candidates in one go .... ? increase its workforce quickly with qualified candidates that have current experience. anc, stop taking. try and create.
