Cape Town - Statistics released by the Independent Electoral Commission show that if the ANC want to wrest control of the Western Cape from the Democratic Alliance in next year’s elections, they will have a mountain to climb.

According to the Sunday Times, seven out of 10 Cape Town wards that registered the most new voters in November were DA strongholds. This puts the party in control of eight of the 10 Cape Town wards with the most voters.

According to the ANCs Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile, the party would intensify voter registration in ANC stronghold areas before February - the last voter registration round.

Final voter registration weekend

The February registration weekend will be the final opportunity for new voters to register and for registered voters to change their voting station ahead of the 2014 national and provincial elections.

The IEC said President Jacob Zuma was expected to announce the election date shortly after the second registration weekend.

The IEC said it was hoping to reach 80% registration.

A registration weekend was held on 9 and 10 November in which just over one million new voters were added to the voters' roll.
