DA wants Joemat-Pettersson out

2012-10-08 17:39

Johannesburg - Agriculture Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson should be dismissed after 51% of her department's planned targets were not achieved, the DA said on Monday.

"Only 17% were actually fully achieved, even though the department managed to spend 99% of its appropriated budget," Democratic Alliance spokesperson Annette Steyn said in a statement.

"The majority of planned indicators and targets specified in the strategic plan were not even submitted for audit purposes... Clearly, Minister Joemat-Pettersson is unfit to hold public office."

Steyn said the agriculture department’s annual performance provided ample grounds for dismissal.

The auditor general (AG) had noted the department could not explain why specific targets were not achieved in 46 percent of the cases.

"Of those that were submitted, he writes that he was unable to satisfy himself as to the validity, accuracy, and completeness of the actual performance reported," said Steyn.

Where under-expenditure occurred it was related to "weak spots" within the department.

Joemat-Pettersson's spokesperson Palesa Mokomele said the minister did not run the department's administration.

"The minister does not run the administration of the department. That is the director general's job," she said.

"The DA are the ones who are not fit to run office as they are not aware of what the minister's role within the department is."

Steyn said about half of R36 million not spent by the department was attributable to the procurement of mobile veterinary clinics as part of the primary animal health care programme.

"The AG found that the accounting officer did not take effective steps to prevent irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure," she said.

"Irregular expenditure amounted to R6.1m, and fruitless and wasteful expenditure to R12.2m."

Make her pay all the wastage back. Then let her go work on a farm far from public office...

      John - 2012-10-08 18:48

The spokesperson is ridiculously funny : " no, YOU should not be in office! Not the minister's role to make sure things run properly..." I wonder if she knows she sounds like a 2 year old throwing a tantrum after being found out? Yes, because lashing out is the answer, not explaining and being accountable...( sarcasm sign for those itching to jab the thumbs down..) One important thing is happening, i.e. these things are coming out. Blatant misadministration and misappropriation of public funds and the inevitable service delivery failure. What is being done about it? That's what I would like to know. The impression I get is they carry on living lives of luxury, they get angry when criticised , but they carry on as if nothing happened. " Skippy " the voter shrugs his shoulders, turns a blind eye and keeps voting them since they brought about 'freedom' . How much credit does the struggle buy these idiots in government? When does it run out? Only after they've pillaged everything and more people start dying of hunger? Case in point: Goodwil Zwelithini. Brings in no tourist revenue, his 'subjects' live in shacks and poverty, yet he gets R55M to spend on new luxury cars and other annual ' necessities '. I don't understand how this is ok with the poor man. Surely something must 'click' upstairs that the 'leaders' are living the life and nothing changes for them. Let's not even bring up bra-Zuma.

      John - 2012-10-08 19:00

Zuma, the poor thing lies awake thinking of his poor people starving while R234M is spent on his private home. But it's ok - uncle mac maharaj explained it was for security upgrades you see. And we can't have our president living in squalor - what message would THAT send to the world? These things are of bigger concerns than intervening in wildcat strikes you see . Zuma reminded us that he's the father of the land and these strikers are just petulant children that will get over it by themselves if he ignores them for long enough.. But let them keep on emptying the tax coffers. The working South African can just work more and be taxed harder if these coffers run out. DA is just exaggerating it seems..they're 'always' complaining because they're 'racists' . And the thousands of black people in that party are there because they've been 'fooled' by the white-madam.. Not because they see anything wrong with the ANC, those are all lies you see.. And so ANC keeps plodding along living the good life, so long as they keep the struggle alive, they keep getting the votes insisting the DA is an 'evil white party'. The misspending is all legal you see.. How much worse could it be to be treated as a second class citizen in Australia or Canada than being treated as a 2nd class citizen in your own country while your tax money funds the president's lifestyle?

fire the idiot shes useless sitting all day long in her office with her poepsak being cooled off with aircons

      croix.mactee - 2012-10-09 04:45

Before she starts the job on the "Farm", make her put on the 'orange suit'? If all corruption / misappropriation / wasteful expenses were treated as the criminality they are, very, very few ministahs would NOT be required to wear an "Orange Suit".

  • christelle.james.7 - 2012-10-08 17:49

DA - do not stop. Even if nothing comes of your complaints - let the people see what incompetence is doing to our country. Maybe you will just open some eyes (and I think your are, if I read some of the comments to articles)

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-08 18:11

@christelle, I think there's more chance of me falling pregnant. They don't want to "see" anything wrong with this guwwermint

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-10-08 18:16

Andrez, you would be surprised. There are a couple of African people I know of, who are working hard behind the scenes to lobby support for the DA. It might not seem like much - but how do you eat an elephant - one bite at a time buddy!

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-08 18:37

@christelle. I didn't mean to get your back up. I should have said the majority; looking at some of the comments on other articles. Sorry :) Keep up the good work ...

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-10-08 18:54

Andrez no.....You did not get my back up my friend. I don't get annoyed easily:-) Leonard, so have I. Can I tell you, I feel more sorry for them( the ones who sees the real truth) then what I do for us as "white" people. Their own people reject them completely:-( Look at the most prominent one, being Lindiwe! In saying one eats and elephant one bite at a time, we need to speed up the eating and get more people to eat that elephant before it has gone completely rotten.

"The minister does not run the administration of the department. That is the director general's job," she said. Passing the buck? Actually, passing the tuna seems more appropriate in this context!

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-10-08 18:01

Fish rots from the head down - but I suppose it does not apply to our esteemed and very competent government!

      colin.dovey - 2012-10-08 18:18

How about her packing the vrot ones for the DA to use as ammunition in Parliament?

  • brandon.mccutcheon.56 - 2012-10-08 18:12

Is that a Fur coat that our minister of 'Agriculture' is wearing?

  • ruben.maistry - 2012-10-08 18:15

Yet another prime example of INCOMPETANCY.Her spokesman's reply says it all, equally INCOMPETANT.One of Mr. Mandela's fears when the anc came into power was 'We are not ready to run the country" Only one man in the anc with intellect.Scary for a political party that runs our country.

  • gary.doyle.520 - 2012-10-08 18:17

One has to agree, she runs the department of agriculture like Autum Harvest.

  • loki.scribus - 2012-10-08 18:24

51%? I think the threshold should be 85% - a person in that position is directly responsible for the lives of others, and should therefore be able to guarantee some measure of success. 51% means she can mos sit op haar gat for most of the time.

      sheik.mohammad.378 - 2012-10-08 18:48

Pass mark is 30% for schools so I would guess it's possibly been set lower for Government.

  • Scippypowa - 2012-10-08 19:02

The minister does not run the administration of the department. That is the director general's job," she said. Lmao. It scares me that people like her is running a country. Straight from the bush

      nico.dejongh.90 - 2012-10-13 20:40

Ministers's signatures are required on all major financial transactions. Easy, that's the only requirement needed to qualify as minister. Zuma signed all their applications and the UN honors our blunt spear. Mal.. eh, mal, I tell you.

  • patrick.saunders123 - 2012-10-08 19:06

is the DA serious? With a track record like that Jou-Ma-Se-Pettersen is eligible for a performance bonus.

  • kobus.louw.980 - 2012-10-08 20:19

If possible - OUT of the Country! The most useless minister we have ever had!!!

  • norman.buchalter - 2012-10-08 21:13

Enough of all these excuses. The DG did it! The Deputy DG did it! You know we have to have a titular head of department of agriculture as a minister - but in name only. Yes, employ another titular who just doesn't do his or her bitular. When will these people realise there is something called value for money , accountability, taking responsibility for what you've been appointed to do? AND PLEASE RESIGN WHEN YOU CANNOT FIT THE BILL OR WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO HAVE MADE A MAJOR ,AHEM, STUFF UP! (I'd say error in judgement but that presupposes one is able to judge in the first place).ANC YOU have developed the art of lying in state into a finer art than a Da Vinci could have painted had he been commissioned to do so. And yes, you do it so naturally without even blinking. Bring back the fear of a God into your value system, or at least be scared that your Ancestors will be judging you and will find you failing the respect test. Humba. Humba . Humba.

  • pierre.walt - 2012-10-08 22:04

Pales a is one dumb idiot. The minister is responsible for all happenings in her department. If she cannot manage this (as all ANC ministers cannot) why is she appointed. Sleep with some ministers yes an carry their fur presents.

  • archie.mooki - 2012-10-08 22:21

    Tannie Jo -Ma ...

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-10-09 00:29

I don't know how this one has managed to survive as long as she has in the ANC... as embarrassing as the ANC is... this one is the proverbial cherry on the top of the cake...... clueless is a complete understatement when it comes to this one..... and when the lid is finally blown on the extent of this one's complacency, corruption and down right 'stupid is as stupid does' as clever as she thinks she is.... it is going to be straight to jail, do not pass go...

  • brionyl.french - 2012-10-09 07:02
